MACIE HARGROVE SMILED AS she sped down the desolate road in the equally boring Hawkins, Indiana. Her father moved the whole family out to the middle of nowhere from California for his job, which was completely stupid if you asked her.

She could've stayed if she really wanted to, but as a 23-year-old female, Macie couldn't do much. Her father told her that all she was useful for was being a good-for-nothing housewife that could barely do the laundry.

So Macie stayed with her family and moved halfway across the country.

Macie rolled down the windows, letting the wind blow through her long blonde hair and turned up the music on her radio. It was moments like these where she felt truly free.

"That's all they really want!" Macie sang loudly, "Some fun! When the working day is done Oh girls, they wanna have fun."

She closed her eyes for a moment, breathing in the fresh air. When she opened them, there was suddenly a truck stopped at a stoplight and Macie gasped as she hit the breaks. But she wasn't fast enough. Macie's head hit the steering wheel as she bumped into the bumper of the truck, "Oh, crap." Macie hissed as she rubbed her forehead.

The sound of a car door closing filled her ears and Macie looked up to see a large man with a hat on making his way towards her. Metal on his shirt flashed in the moonlight and Macie swore. It was a cop.

"Are you kidding me?!" He shined a flashlight on her face, "Are you drunk or something?"

"N-no." Macie shook her head, "I-"

"Well, you couldn't have hit a tree!?" He turned to look at his car, "Look at my bumper!" The cop sighed and put his hands on his hips, "Step out of the car, kid."

Macie's hands shook as she opened the door. She stepped out and wrapped her sweater closer to herself, "Sir, look, I'm sorry, I-"

"Listen, kid, I'm gonna need your license and registration and then I'm gonna take you back to your parents and-"

"Wait, wait!" Macie's eyes widened, "Please, not my parents. They'll kill me."

The sheriff  stood there for a moment before nodding, "Well, I could press charges or..." Jim sighed, placing his hands on his hips,

"...Or?" Macie raised her eyebrows,

"Community service."'

"Like picking up trash in a park?" Macie smiled, "I can do that."

Hopper smirked, "Yeah, sure, kid. Meet me in my office on Monday, 9 am."

Macie nodded eagerly, "Yes, sir. I'll be there. Thank you!" She got back into the car and Hopper leaned down to look at her through the window,

"That pedal down there? It's called the brakes. Use them."
