"SORRY I'M LATE," Macie said as she walked into her house, her father and step-mother were sitting at the kitchen table, along with her younger brother and step-sister, "Um, Hopper kept me at the station a bit later than expected."
She sat down next to her brother and smiled at Max, her step-sister, "How was your day?"
Max opened her mouth to speak but her father interrupted, "Kids, you may be excused." They both got up and Macie was about to go with them when he spoke again, "Not you."
Macie swallowed nervously and her brother squeezed her hand before going to his room.
"I told you, I was with-"
"Chief Hopper, I know." Her father stood and walked behind her chair, "Were you fucking him?"
Macie's eyes widened as she turned to look at her father, "What?! Of course not, I was-"
He smacked the back of her head, causing her to wince before he pulled on her hair to look at him, "You think I would believe your story? You stayed late at work? Nothing ever happens here in Hawkins, Macie. Now... I'm going to ask again. Were you... fucking... him?"
Macie gritted her teeth, "No."
Her father tugged on her hair more, causing her to stand, "I don't approve of lying!" He pushed her into the wall and slapped her across the face, splitting her lip, "You are twenty-three years old and I allow you to stay in this house! You will not lie!"
"I wasn't." Macie urged, "I swear, dad-"
"You're just a lying whore." He growled, "Go to your room." He let go of her and she instantly went towards her room she shared with her step-sister.
She closed the door and sighed, running her fingers over her lip, wincing when she touched the cut. Macie pulled back and there was blood, "Crap."
"Why do you upset him?" Max asked from her bed, "You know being late would make him mad."
"I was working." Macie sighed, sitting next to her younger step-sister, "I didn't think he would be mad over that."
"He's mad over everything." Max commented,
"Yeah, you got that right." Macie smirked, wrapping her arm over her sister's shoulders, "I'll drop you off at the arcade tomorrow before my shift. I'll even get you a donut."
"Billy can-"
"I know Billy can take you but he's mean about it. Just let me be nice." Macie smiled,
"Okay." Max looked up at her older sister, "Can I get a hot chocolate, too?"
