Slick pulled up slowly towards the hospital. He'd been on edge all day. The meeting with Carlile was coming closer and he felt like something was off. Something wasn't right. He didn't want to alarm Kylie so he kept his composure.
He desperately wanted to find the missing link in her history. He was now incredibly curious. "You're sure this is the hospital you were born at?"
"Positive," Kylie said as Slick Parker the car. "My mom used to work here. She always thought it was funny because she went into labor while she was at work. What are we looking for anyway?"
"Mathias has a higher up associate here. I'm hoping he could find us your records," Slick said and opened his car door.
"Whoever wiped my background clean has probably been here. Those records are most likely long gone," Kylie said while trailing behind Slick.
"Probably, but we don't have any other leads right now."
"We should pretend we're detectives," Kylie smirked.
"Or apart of the Scooby gang."
"I'm Velma I called it."
"No, you're scrappy. The annoying one," Slick smiled.
"Whatever," Kylie smirked, "I wanna make this quick. I hate hospitals."
Slick hated hospitals too. He very seldom had a good experience. He was usually here after being shot or if one of his men were hurt.
The hospital was fairly empty. Which put slick on edge immediately. It didn't feel right. He wanted to get this over with as quickly as possible.
They rode the elevator in silence to the third floor. Kylie was nervous. She wasn't sure if she was going to be happy with what she found out today, if she found out anything at all.
Slick motioned for Kylie to follow him to a giant wooden door at the end of the hall. She reached for the doorknob but he stopped her.
"This is his office. Don't mention that you're the one who's shit we're looking for. I don't trust him and I don't want him flapping his jaws for some extra cash to an enemy," Slick said.
"Alright."
"Let's go."
Slick knocked on the door once and walked in. Brian was a pale, scrawny man in his late 30's. He burrowed money from Mathias years ago. He couldn't pay it back so he was now an informant for Mathias. He told him when enemies came into the hospital and he was a good spy for Mathias. Yet, Slick didn't trust him. He never did.
"Come in," Brian said and smirked. "Slick, it's good to see you."
"Likewise," Slick said shortly. "What did you find, Brian?" Brian felt a small sliver of fear. The last person he needed against him was Slick. He was also nervous at the information he was going to present.
Kylie stood behind Slick trying to remain as invisible as possible. She could feel the tension rolling off both of these men.
"Uhm, I didn't find a whole lot on the girl," Brian murmured.
"Did you make me come all the way down here to hand me bullshit?" Slick asked.
"No of course not. I would never do that. I did find a home address of where her grandfather lived across town. From what I've seen he's passed away since then."
This got Kylie's attention. She never knew any of her grandparents. Her mother's parents died before she was born; and she obviously didn't know her father's parents. Her hands practically inches towards the folder.
"Give me the folder," Slick said and snatched it out of the Brian's hands who flinched. He glanced at the papers quickly. He was deciding if he should let Kylie see the papers or not. He wasn't sure if Mathias would have a hissy fit if he showed her.
"Alright. Let's get out of here," Slick said and opened the office door for Kylie to leave. He whispered something she couldn't hear to Brian and closed the door behind him.
Kylie noticed a man at the end of the hallway silently watching her and Slick. He stood with a dark coat on and sunglasses. She couldn't make out his face but even through the sunglasses she could feel his hard stare.
"You were so rude to him," Kylie said and trailed behind Slick. Trying to ignore the man.
"He's a piece of shit. Believe me. You have no idea what a pig he is."
"He still did the digging and he was still the one who found my information," she said. Kylie glanced behind her and the man was following them. She could see Slick looking in the mirrors at the end of the hallway. Did he see that they were being followed?
Slick scoffed, "He hardly found anything. Besides it was his secretary who did the hard lifting. He's too lazy to get off his ass and actually go do anything for himself. Hence why he owes Mathias money."
The man followed them down every twist and turn. The hallways seemed to grow narrower.
"Slick, I think someone is following us," Kylie whispered.
"I think the same thing," he muttered. "Come on."
Slick grabbed Kylie's hand and ran. He wanted to find a place to hide. If there is one of these assholes then there is bound to be more. Slick could hear the man running to keep up.
Slick opened the first door he could and pushed Kylie in. He crawled in behind her. It was a closet with no light.
Kylie was pushed right up against Slick. She could hear his heartbeat. It was calm and steady unlike hers.
"Are you okay?" He whispered.
Kylie nodded, "Yes. I just don't understand what's happening."
"Someone doesn't want anyone to know about you. I'll bet they've been following us since we left the club."
They stayed in that position for a few extra moments. It was unbearably silent.
Slick moved to peak his head out and check if they left.
He whispered, "They're gone. We gotta sneak out of here. If there's one person looking for us I'll be there's more."
