I was avoiding seeing him throughout the day and it was easy as hell. I decided not to stay up waiting for him just to avoid talking or even greeting him. It was a ghastly sensation, it was a sensation I never wanted to feel with him. Though it happened about a week ago, my mind never let go of what Adira told me. Where did he go that night and why did he lie to me?
"So Zab told me that someone liked the florist." A taunting voice said hindering my thoughts as it always accustomed to.
"Adira!" I exclaimed surprised with a grin. "Shouldn't you be at work?"
"I had to meet up with a client that lives a few blocks away so I might as well, right?"
"I guess but what the hell are you talking about?
Adira's signature smirk had my eyes rolling as I tried to evade her piercing gaze. If there was something Adira was great at was teasing the shit out of us. "You know exactly what I'm talking about. Where's the notecard?"
"Notecard?" I choked at the fact that she knew about it.
She sneakily grabbed my purse and scavenged through it and at that point, I was well aware that I was in for a treat.
"Ah ha!" She hollered with a crazy lady face, reading the note I had forgotten to take out. I couldn't even retrieve the sweet words that made me blush a few days ago.
"Girl," Adira said looking flabbergasted. "Marry this dude instead. Tell me how cute he is."
"He has these beautiful - wait, " I glared at her knowingly and shook my head. "Adira!"
"What?!" She laughed. "Oh please Rosalie, you're dying to tell me about him."
"I'll feel guilty if I do," I said on a more serious note. Was it okay to gush about another guy when you were married?
Adira groaned, throwing my purse to the side and pulling the chair in front of me out. "Please forget about him for a while."
"I can't," I stressed. "Adira, even if he's not being the best husband right now he's still my husband. I have to respect him so I can't go around drooling over some hot ass boy I saw once."
"So you admit it! He's hot!"
"I can't talk to you, can I?"
"Nope," she innocently smiled. "Cause he's a dickhead and if he doesn't respect you, you shouldn't either."
"Oh Adira..." I hummed with a bitter smile. "If only things were that easy."
She glanced at me with an amused expression, "it isn't?"
"No," I responded annoyed. "Because I love him."
"I don't get it, Rosalie. How can you love someone who's never there for you?"
It was something I constantly asked myself; it wasn't new. But hearing Adira saying it left me speechless because was it that noticeable that he didn't equally love me back?
"He was mesmerizing..." I whispered in hopes of escaping the tension and the question.
Adira leaned in; this was what she wanted to hear. "Yes?"
"He had these beautiful green eyes," I said smiling as I tried to reimagine the attractive boy and all his features that caught my attention. "Beautiful smile and his voice... it was so soothing. His laugh was cute, kinda loud and weird but I think I liked it. He was super sweet."
"I like him already. I have to meet him."
"Don't overthink think this, Adira. I found the boy attractive and that's it. It's not like he changed anything."
She kept quiet, almost unsure of what to say next. She bit her bottom lip and opened her mouth to say something but quickly shut it.
"What is it?"
"I don't know. Rosalie... you know I care about you right? You're one of my best friend's and all I want is for you to be happy."
I smiled at her, touched by her nice words. "Of course I do and as do I to you."
"As you know, I've started to work at Zabdiel's firm now."
"Yes!" I beamed. "How's that going? Did you sleep with your boss yet?"
She gasped. "Tonta! But no, not yet. Listen, I asked him about Luke."
"Oh?" I questioned. "What about?"
"I asked him what time Luke usually went home."
Everything from the tip of my toes and up went cold. It never even occurred to me to ask Zabdiel about my husband but it was logical. Zabdiel had to know.
"And?" I choked, feeling the air in my throat restricted.
"He told me that Luke left around the same time as him because they always see each other at the exit. And-"
"And what?"
"Zabdiel leaves around six or seven. Aside from that... Rosalie - I think he's cheating."
"Rosalie?" Linda interfered with her soft voice, standing by the door with a bouquet in hands. "Addie? What's going on?"
"I'll explain later? Are those from Luke?" Adira asked with an obvious irritation in her voice.
"Yeah," she mumbled. "Here, Rosie."
I numbly took the bouquet and I swear I could feel my heart squeeze and dry up, dropping to my feet the moment I held the flowers. Him cheating. The flowers.
"What's it say?" Adira asked but I couldn't find my voice or the strength to reassure her with a smile.
"Rosie?"
You're the only one I see. You're the only one I dream. You're the only one for me. You are the light that the world fails to see.
