It's Not All Roses

Chapter 4

I drive back to my dorm in silence, trying to process Hero’s attitude towards me. I’m not sure what I did to him to make him so upset with me. I sigh when I park my car and drag my feet to my dorm once I’m in the building.

I toss off my clothes I wore to the part and put on my white shirt, along with some pajama shorts with Jack and Sally on them. I wash my face of the make up and pull my hair back into a pony tail, getting into bed.

I know it’s bad for you, but I need music to sleep. So I plug my headphones in, turn on my Halsey Spotify playlist and close my eyes.

My eyes were getting heavy when suddenly the door flies open. I sit up quickly and look over to see Luke and Jess walking in. He smiles at me.

“Sorry, she’s drunk, wanted to make sure she got back okay.”

“It’s fine,” I say.

Luke helps Jess into her bed. He slips her shoes off and make sure to take out the unruly ponytail. He tosses the covers over her and tucks her in. I just look at them in aw because it’s so sweet to see someone as punk as Luke tucking a sweet girl like Jess in.

I really hope they are dating.

He comes over and sits next to me for a moment while looking at Jess. “I saw that you left with Hero and Kiya, how was he on the drive home? He’s so protective of Kiya it’s insane.”

I shrug my shoulders and let out a sigh because I don’t know what to say. “He didn’t say much to me to be honest.”

I sit there lost in my thoughts. I mean if he doesn’t like me, he doesn’t like me right? I don’t ever really have to talk to him unless small talk is brought up if he happens to be with Kiya.

“Earth to Mae?” Luke waves his hand in front of my face. He’s standing in front of me.

“Sorry! I got lost in thought.”

He’s walking to the door now. He opens it and then looks back at me. “Be careful with Hero. He’s... he’s a lot. Kind of a ladies man. I don’t want to him to get to you.”

“Oh I don’t plan to.”

“Night Mae. Have a good first day tomorrow.”

“Thanks, you too.”

He smiles and locks the door before leaving. I lay back down and start to count down from 100 while Halsey plays in my ears. I don’t remember what number I stopped at before I fell asleep and dreamt of green eyes.

I’m actually up before my alarm, with a surprising amount of energy. Jess is dead asleep but if I remember correctly she didn’t have classes in the morning.

I grab a blouse with sunflowers on it along with my ripped shorts that are high waisted. I decide to let my hair fall in its natural waves and only use light make up. I leave Jess a note on her desk.

I’m really good at remembering directions so I find Kiya’s apartment quick. I’m sitting in my car for a few moment, going through my iPhone.

Christian: I hope you have a good first day Mae.

The message makes me smile and I send a simple thanks back to him. I get out of my car and make my way into the building and up to the second floor where Kiya’s apartment is.

After knocking four times the door finally swings open. Hero stands there with his hair all disheveled and just in some black boxers. I can’t help but stare at all his tattoos. I know I’m blushing because I can feel the heat on my cheeks. “Umm..” I cough. “Is Kiya here?”
