Chapter Eighty-Two

     November 2012

     Present Day

“Enjoying the wedding so far?” Jake asked as he pulled me back towards him after twirling me away. “I think we managed to pull off something decent.”

“Yeah, I think so too.” I looked around me and nodded. “If only we’d hired another family instead of my mother’s.”

“Your grandmother hasn’t smiled since she arrived.” He sighed. “And she’s wearing black. Seriously, when is old age going to make her nicer?”

“She’ll be nice when she’s dead.” I grumbled. “Atleast then she’ll have one facial expression, and she won’t be able to talk again.”

Jake chuckled and shook his head. “You’re going to hell for saying stuff like that, Avy.”

“Whatever.” I shrugged, not at all feeling bad for saying stuff like that about my grandmother. She was family and all, but I hated her. And she hated me. “It’d be worth it.”

“Well, she is a horrible woman.” Jake nodded and waltzed us around. “I mean, it’s her granddaughter’s wedding, can’t she atleast try?”

“And miss an opportunity like this to make everyone feel bad?” I snorted. “Good thing Gaby didn’t say a word to her since she came. And I’ve been trying to avoid her as much as I can.” I looked over at my grandmother’s table, she was chatting with Natasha. They seemed perfect company for each other. Two miserable hags. “I wish she’d take Natasha and leave, and maybe they could have a car accident or something, and we’d be free from their shit forever.”

“Still cynical and ballsy enough to say stuff like that about your family, I see.” The sides of his lips turned downwards and he nodded. “I’m impressed. Motherhood hasn’t totally changed you.”

“I still got a dark soul.” I chuckled. “I just try not to let it show too much these days. Don’t want to rub off on my kid.”

     “Good call.”

We danced in silence for a bit, and I tried to spot Drake but he wasn’t there. I’d asked about him a few minutes ago and Brian had told me that he’d stepped into the house for a bit. Maybe he didn’t want to see me dance with Jake. Nothing was going on, we weren’t flirting, and our intense moment from a few days ago was truly forgotten now. We were good, and he’d even managed to get Olivia on the phone so she could congratulate Josh and Gaby. Gaby had told me she sounded nice and sincere, that made me happy. I’d been a bit jealous, but had gotten over it quickly. Jake being someone else’s and not mine was going to take some getting used to, for the both of us.

The song ended and I finally spotted Drake just coming out of the house, he searched the dance floor with his eyes till he found me. He looked at Jake, then back at me and offered me a reassuring smile.

I was about to step away from Jake when a new song started, and we both froze. Duncan James’ soft voice wafted from the speakers around us. It was the song Jake had played when he’d proposed to me, and we’d vowed to dance to it whenever and wherever it played. I hadn’t heard it since the divorce, so we hadn’t been put in that situation since.

Jake looked at me and tried to gauge my reaction. I sighed and shrugged. “What do we do now? This is kind of personal.”

“How about we try and make good on one of our promises?” He suggested. “I won’t make a pass at you, I swear. But for old times’ sake?”
