Donovan looked to Carter, his hand on the door knob. With a nod from her, he edged the door open. For a breath, they waited. No sound came from inside. Letting the door swing open, they moved in, making no sound. The mansion before them was in disarray. Paintings were falling off walls and the wallpaper was faded and torn. Donovan swung his gun to the left as Carter stepped in and angled hers to the right, surveying the scene.
"Clear," Donovan said.
"Clear," she echoed.
They noiselessly cut their way through the house, checking rooms. They ascended the stairs, the carpet moth eaten and fraying. They moved as if one mind, always in a smooth practiced motion like a dance.
When they edged down the final hall, they heard muffled voices.
Donovan met Carter's gaze and gave a nod. They split, taking either side of the door. The voices rose inside, agitated and contradictory. Donovan held up three fingers. In silence, he lowered finger after finger. When the last one was tucked away, he turned to the door and kicked. It splintered under his strength, crashing open.
Yells of surprise and scrambling footsteps reverberated through the room as Donovan and Carter raced inside.
"FBI! Hands up!"
Carter took the right side of the room while Donovan took the left. His first two targets were bald men reaching for guns. Two bullets to each of their chests took them out. The third opponent already had his pistol aimed at Donovan by the time he was swinging around towards him. Diving for cover behind a torn up couch, he heard the shots ringing out over head. The second he landed on the hard floor, he was rolling and firing at the man from around the couch's legs. A bullet to the leg had the man kneeling and was finished with a shot to the chest.
Standing, Donovan turned to help Carter. What he found were three bodies dropped and Carter kicking a fourth in the chest. The force of the blow sent the man flying across the room and colliding with the far wall. He slumped to the ground, unconscious. Wiping away a bead of sweat, Carter lifted her wrist.
"Area secure."
She then turned towards Donovan. The woman before him was like an unstoppable force. Her breath was even and though she was sweating, she didn't seem to be at all worn out. A million words formed in Donovan's mind. She was like nothing he had ever seen. The very way she moved made him forget everything at times.
What life had been like before she was by his side, reading his thoughts, sensing his emotions was hard to remember. He didn't want to ever go back. There was never a time he didn't want to turn around and know that he would find her there. In that moment, the clarity of all he ever wanted in life was her, hit him like a physical blow.
"Carter..." he said, looking for a way that would be able to tell her everything.
The edge of her mouth curled up and her eyes took on a look he knew well. It was a look that said she knew all that he was thinking.
"Yes, I will," she said, like it was the simplest decision she had ever made.
He smiled in wonderment and disbelief. She raised her gun at the doorway.
"Let's finish this, you still need to ask Captain for his blessing. "She smirked. "Good luck with that."
