1:43 a.m. is what my alarm clock reads on my night table. Christian fell asleep a few hours ago but I haven't been able to sleep more than ten minutes due to Blip constantly pressing against my bladder. I finally give up on sleep and get out of bed, making my way to the bathroom to pee for probably the fifteenth time in the past few hours. As I wash my hands, I hear a noise directly above me, stopping me in my tracks. Who would be upstairs? I quickly leave the bedroom, being quiet as to not wake Christian, and listen for any further noise. When nothing happens, I quickly climb the stairs leading to the second floor of the penthouse, trying to be as silent as possible. Once I reach the top of the stairs, I glance down the hallway, seeing no one. I walk towards the bedroom that Christian gave to his submissives but stop when I see a light coming from underneath the door of the Red Room of Pain. Why on earth would that light be on? Maybe Mrs. Jones was cleaning in there and forget to turn it off. I reach for the door handle, expecting it to be locked, but to my surprise, it's not. I stand there for a moment, dumbfounded. Only Mrs. Jones and Christian have a key to this room, and neither of them are stupid enough to leave it unlocked. I slowly turn the knob, making not even the slightest noise. I open the door slightly and peer through the crack, not sure what I will see, but what I do see, leaves me breathless.
A man dressed in black stands in the middle of the room with his back turned towards me, taking pictures of the bed and walls around it. He moves slightly to his right to take another picture, but moves just enough for me to identify who it is. Sawyer. I stay where I am, careful not to make a sound, and watch as he retrieves a small notepad from his back pocket. He writes something down and puts the notepad away, taking a few more pictures of the room. I notice how tired he looks, seeing dark bags under his eyes as if he hasn't slept in days. I get too caught up thinking why he hasn't slept to realize that Sawyer was heading towards the door, clearly done with whatever he had been doing. Before I even think of moving, the door swings open and I am met with a surprised Sawyer who grows redder by the minute, and I am 100% sure he is met with a very pregnant woman that is double as red as he is.
"Mrs. Grey, you scared me!" he said, evidently embarrassed I had caught him in the playroom.
"I'm sorry, Sawyer. I couldn't sleep and heard a noise coming from up here, so I thought I would come see what it was. What were you doing in there?" I ask him, watching as he turned even more red.
"Well...you see..." He began, clearly uncomfortable, "The construction of your new house is wrapping up and Mr. Grey had expressed that he wanted his...um...special room to look the same as it does here. So I've been gathering measurements and photographs so that this room can become identical to the new one."
By the time he had finished, I was as red as a tomato. I knew Christian had asked Taylor and Sawyer to oversee the construction of the house when we weren't available, but I had no idea that they would have been involved in such an...intimate...detail of the house.
"I see," I responded to him, wracking my brain for anything more to say.
"I apologize for making noise, ma'am."
"It's fine, Sawyer. I am sorry my husband is making you work this late," I tell him truthfully.
"It's not a problem, Mrs. Grey. Work has to be done. If you'll excuse me, I have to type up my notes for the construction workers. Goodnight."
And with that, he disappeared down the hall while I hit my head over and over again with my hand. That had to be one of the most embarrassing moments of my life. Of course he would be in there doing something for Christian. Why would I have thought otherwise? It's just Sawyer, after all. I head back down the stairs and into our bedroom where I find Christian walking out of the bathroom, glaring at me.
"What the hell, Ana! Where were you? Do you know how terrifying it is to wake up and find your pregnant wife gone?"
I instantly feel bad, knowing he has been incredibly concerned about Blip and I, especially with Jack Hyde on the loose.
"I'm sorry, Christian. I couldn't sleep and got a glass of water," I lie, not wanting to relive the embarrassing conversation that occurred with Sawyer less than two minutes ago.
Christian walks up and embraces me, pulling me as close as he can without squashing Blip.
"I just need you to be safe, Ana. That's all I need in life. You and Blip safe," he says before gently kissing my lips. I kiss him back, savoring the moment. He guides me back into bed and gently pulls me into him so that we're spooning.
"Try to get some sleep, love."
I close my eyes and imagine our family in our new home, happy and safe. Too bad dreams are only dreams.
