Thomas' eyes opened wide when I walk down the stairs. I made sure to strut and flaunt my appearance. I need him to notice me and think of me as more than a friend.
"You look beautiful." Thomas said. My face blushed against my will and he noticed. He let his lips curve into a sly smile.
"So do you." I said, and returned his smile with one of sincerity. He had tucked in his shirt and washed his face, and his hair was combed and styled.
"Thanks," He said,"But no one can compare to how good you look." I blushed more. Now it seemed like he was hard-core flirting with me.
He stepped forward, and I could smell his very common minty-sweet deoderant. My eyes instantly shifted to the floor beneath his gaze. I had no idea what was going on.
"Seriously, Gabrielle. You're stunning." I looked up, slightly shocked at his sudden compliments and my heart was fluttering so fast.
The doorbell snapped everything back to it's original form. I stepped away and swung open the door, as a rush of peopled flowed into my home. Guys, girls, strangers, and familiar faces. We instantly started blasting the music, and I was wrapped into a crowd of bodies, and moving along to the music, getting snacks, or getting a drink. Apparently, some people brought their own booze, and because I knew none of Thomas' friends, I had no idea if they were legal or not. I decided not to be the party pooper and only crash the drinking fest going on in my living room if it got out of hand.
Everyone danced in the foyer, and we'd rearanged the living room couches to give more space. The living room, kitchen and entrace were all connected with no walls in the wide open space. It was perfect.
The lights dimmed, and people started pairing up. I formed a circle with Aoife, Georigia, Lucy, and Lucy's friend Leila and we started to dance together since we were all currently single. I caught a glimpse of Thomas and Hannah moving together, their lips inches apart. But instead of kissing or whispering, it sort of looked like they were arguing. I smiled to myself and hoped for the best.
For me, at least.
The party was a stready excitment, we were all having fun. It was dark and hot, but it added to the atmosphere. We all just got into that "Live in the moment" mindset, and the adrenalin of craziness was awesome.
By midnight, though, things changed. People spilt up to either make out in corners or head home.
After the crowd cleared a bit, I noticed Thomas and Hannah had seperated. She was putting on her coat and trying to find her shoes, looking slightly tipsy, while Thomas was making his way over to the snacks. I excused myself from my loud group of friends and joined him.
"So, was the party a success?" I asked him, as he turned around and stared at me, his celery green eyes looking hurt.
"The party was a success. My night, however, was not."
"What's wrong?" I asked, my eyebrows furrowing, just like they did everytime I was concerned.
"Just Hannah..." He said, my heart leapt with excitment, but I tried to hide in from my face, arching my brows even more. "We had an argument... it's nothing."
"No, no, you can tell me. I mean, if you want to..." His eyes showed gratitude as he signalled for me to follow him. We went upstairs so no one would over-hear and the music wasn't as loud.
"She just... She tries way too hard." Thomas complains as he closes the door behind me. "She's always trying to prove something to someone. Like the other day, she admitted she hadn't eaten for a week so she would be the skinniest at her photo shoot. Like what kind of crap is that? I don't think I can take someone as shallow as her."
My initial excitment of hopefully winning Thomas over faded. I didn't care about trying to get him to love me, all I wanted to do was console a sad friend.
"Thomas..."
"She doesn't realize how that makes me feel? If she can't even accept who she is, how will she ever accept me? She doesn't even care about me. I'm convinced all she thinks I am is someone who could make her look good. Just for appearances. She doesn't even love me. She admitted it.She said, 'I can't say I love you yet, it's too soon.' What does that even mean!" Thomas throws a fist to the wall, and leans his head against it, his back to me.
"I feel like such a fool," He says, "I was sure we were forever. We were together for just over a year and..."
He turns around and his eyes are wet with tears.
"I just don't want to be forgotten." He says.
"You won't be," I assure him, and then use his ownwords and add, "I remember you."
He moves towards me and looks down into my eyes, and I stare back into his. He carefully places his hands on my cheeks, and I put mine infront of me, on his chest. His heart is beating very fast, and I'm sure mine is too.
"I could never forget you," I say as he leans in closer to me, our foreheads touching. His lips graze mine as I finish my last word, and then they gently meet in a soft kiss.
