Chapter 7: Interrogation

11:14 am

“Miss, are your alright? Are you in any pain? Can you tell me your name or the name and number of your parents?” A woman said standing over me. She was wearing scrubs and stethoscope, she was a nurse and I was lying in the hospital. The room was cold; lights swayed back and forth dangling from the ceiling. Looking around the room, I responded, “Um, yes, uh, my name is Riley Parker…um where is Matt Conner? I need to see him! Where is he?!”

“Calm down, Ms. Parker, it will be alright. Mr. Conner is doing just fine; the police are conducting an investigation on what happened to him. Now get some rest, I’ll be back to check on you later.” The nurse walked out of the room, shutting the door behind her. Following her orders, I rolled over and shut my eyes. A moment later, in walked a couple of the investigators from the Police department.

“Ms. Parker, I’m Detective LeCré, and this is Detective Carson,” He said pointing to his partner. Carson walked over to my bed and bent down beside me giving me a warm smile.

“Hi Riley, you can call me, Lydia”, said Detective Carson, “We need to ask you a few questions about what happened last night is that okay?”

I nodded my head in agreement.

Lydia responded, “Your boyfriend, Matt Conner, was found unconscious last night in the park, he said the last thing he remembers was having a picnic there with you and then waking up in the hospital. Do you remember what happened?”

I paused for a moment to gather my thoughts, what would I say? Would I tell the truth about what happened or would I lie to avoid embarrassment. Without thinking through the words I was about to say, I opened my mouth, “I…I don’t know…I just remember waking up in my room.”

“Ms. Parker, can you tell us why you were found unconscious in the river this morning? Why you might have decided to jump off the bridge in an attempt to commit suicide?” Questioned Detective LeCré.

That’s when the nurse walked in with my test results, “Ah, Detectives, good you’re here. Ms. Parker’s test results came back, these may help with your investigation. Her tox screens show Rohypnol aka ruffies in her system. She also shows signs of vaginal tearing, and minimal bruising on her wrists and ankles. I suggest a rape kit to be done. Oh and Ms. Parker is still on suicide watch.” After filling in the police about my medical report, she walked out of the room to leave me for questioning.

“Riley, do you want to tell us what happened to you? Were you raped?” asked Detective Lydia Carson.

Tears filled my eyes, “Matt and I were enjoying our picnic, the next thing I knew, I was waking up to a man in a mask standing over me and Matt passed out by the tree. I couldn’t really move and the man picked me up over his shoulder and carried me away. The whole night was fuzzy; I woke up in a musky room, chained to the bed, naked. I couldn’t escape. He raped me over and over. He took pictures of me naked. Then, somehow, I woke up in my room. That is all I remember.” I cried.

Leaning down to comfort me, Lydia asked, “who raped you, Riley?”

I shook my head “I don’t know his name and I didn’t see his face ”, I told her, wiping my tears.

Detective Carson and her partner, Detective LeCré, called in the nurse, “we’re going to need more evidence. Run a rape kit on Ms. Parker. Hopefully, it’ll give us the man who did this”, the Detectives told the nurse before leaving the room.

2:33pm

The rape kit was done immediately after the police left, and now I was awaiting the results.

I heard the door open and close quickly behind them. I rolled over to see my nurse standing there with a sad look on her face, “I have a terrible news,” she said, “Your baby didn’t show up in your blood and urine tests. I’m sorry honey, you’ve lost your baby, possibly during your fall.”

I was speechless. I didn’t know whether to be sad that I just lost my baby, or happy that I wasn’t going to be a teenage mom with a rapist as the father. I had mixed feelings about the situation. The idea of being pregnant hadn’t really hit be yet, considering I just found out a couple days ago. I had no plan yet, whether I was going to keep, abort, or put up for adoption. My parents, being the strict Christian parents they are, would have forced me to have the baby and then give it up for adoption. I, on the other hand, hadn’t thought about it.

“I have more bad news,” the nurse said, “your rape kit didn’t show any signs of semen, and your body doesn’t show any defense marks or bruising other than the bruises on your wrists and ankles. All your results aren’t conclusive with rape, besides your tox screen results.”

“What are you trying to say?” I replied, “Are you calling me a liar?”

The nurse responded, “Riley, are you sure this wasn’t just kinky, consensual sex that you were embarrassed about? Maybe, you and Matt got too steamy last night and you don’t remember due to the ruffies you both had your systems. Maybe something happened that made you upset with Matt and so you left the park and him behind. Rohypnol does cause black outs as well, so this is likely to be the case.”

“NO! That is NOT what happened!” I screamed.

“Calm down, I’m just trying to see what really happened, the police aren’t going to believe you if the evidence doesn’t add up,” she told me.

I laid there in silence. I just wanted to go home. I wanted this to be over, but it had only just begun.
