An hour later I see the sign for Bonivista, 200km. The roads are empty; a few infected straggling along here and there. We had seen a group of survivors but by the time I stopped the car a hoard emerged from the trees and attacked the group.  Samantha has been sobbing the whole trip. I feel terrible as I have been ignoring her but there is no time to comfort. I keep both hands on the wheel as I watch the sun set behind the trees. I look at Alec whom is sound asleep in the passenger seat. I notice the silence and check on Sam through the rear-view mirror. Her Blonde hair is strewn across her face as she sleeps silently. A vibrant green sight catches my eye.

Welcome To South Dildo, Newfoundland

I pull over on the road and turn the keys, shutting off the engine. I sigh and check the time. 8:26. my mind goes blank and I realize how tired I actually am. I lean back in my seat, pulling down the visor to block the bright orange of the sun from my eyes. Minutes later I fall into what feels like a trance.

I wake up to the sound of tapping on the windows; I roll over and ignore it. The tapping gets louder and begins to sound like the patter-patter of baby's feet. The longer I ignore the sound, the louder it gets. My heart starts to race.
I open my eyes and my heart starts to slow when I see it’s a heavy downfall of rain. I lie down slowly and stare through the sun roof, listening to the rain pelt the roof of the car.

I start to drift off as a scream wakes me. Someone grabs my shirt and yanks me forward. Sam is sitting, eyes wide and breathing heavily.  Alec and I both look at Sam.

"What is it hun" I ask Sam.

She continues breathing heavily.

"Bad Dream" She manages to say when she catches her breath. We sit in the car staring out the window; the only sound is the rain. Another sound begins to fill the car. I look at Alec who's face mirrors my confusion. Movement in the mirrors startles me and I turn around to see a group of infected surrounding the car.

"Infected." Is all I can manage as they surround the car, banging on the windows, snarling and snapping. I jump and Sam screams. Damn that girl screams a lot

"How are we going to get out of this?" Alec says nonchalantly. I fumble with the keys and start the car.

"Like this" I say, putting the car in drive. "Hold On!" I shout. I slam the peddle to the floor and we take off flying. The few infected in front of us get slammed to the ground and I feel the car drive over the bodies. I stop the car with a sudden jolt. The road is blocked by a dozen of the damn things.

"Shit" Is all I can mumble. I put the car in park and watch as the infected gather aground the car.

"How are we gettin' out of this one now Lachlan?" Sam screams over the groans. I bend open my window an inch, allowing the Infected's fingers to slip through the crack.

"Plug your ears!" Alec and Sam don’t’hesitate and ram their fingers into their ears. I grab my revolver and pull the hammer back, locking the bullet into firing position. I stick the barrel of the gun out the crack, aiming for the first Infected I see. I need to save my pregnant girlfriend and my new friend. I aim for the first infected's head, I slowly squeeze the trigger. The shot rings out, echoing through the car. I pull the hammer back again, locking the bullet into place. I aim and fire. I don't let the ringing in my bother me. After a few seconds of silence, Sam unplugs her ears.

"You okay?" I ask her. She nods.

"Lets keep going." Sam suggest's, lying back down. I continue to drive, shuddering as the back tires skid over skulls. This will be a long drive...
