I sat around for a week waiting for Genevieve to call me. Trying harder doesn't mean I can take control of the situation. It was more like, wait for an opening to appear. So, when Gen called me I seized the opportunity.

"Oh hey, Gen." I say calmly although I was excited I'd fnally have something to do and somebody to talk to.

"Hey. How's everything going?" She sounded cautious. almost like she was already regretting calling me.

"I'm fine, but how are you?"

"Preoccupied. Do you want to go get dinner with me? I want a distraction."

"Sounds good. You can see if anybody else wants to come. I mean, the more the merrier. Right?"

"I kinda wanted to talk to you. About everything. Is that okay too?"

Well, that wasn't exactly the perfect plan I had in mind, but I couldn't exactly say no. "Fine. But you're taking me to Starbuck's afterwards."

Her loud laugh echoes through the phone. "Deal."

Dinner started off a tad awkward. Probably because we were both afraid to talk about anything, or at least I was. I'm not too sure what relationship we have. we used to be best friends, but we can't just pick up so easily? Can we?

"I-I want to ask Niall out." She spits out, making me snap back into reality.

"Oh my gosh!" I begin to gush, "You need to, like for real. you just need to go for it. Like, the sooner the better!"

"I-I'm scared of rejection."

I wasn't sure how to reassure her, because I don't know if he'll say yes. I don't know if he'll say no.

"I can't say he won't say no, but I think it's pretty unlikely, Gen. The way he looks at you. It's kind of just a glimmer of something."

She smiles a bit, "I don't know what would've happened if you didn't come back, Em."

I try to force a smile on my face, but it probably comes off as more of a grimace.

I really wish I didn't come back. My life used to perfect. I had everything. And now, I have nothing. I don't find it fair in the slightest.

"Gen?"

"Yeah?"

"Do you think I'll ever get back with Liam."

She doesn't answer. She just sits there staring at me. "I-I'm not too sure, Em. I can't really tell you anything."

Well, that wasn't the answer I wanted. Or, It was. I don't know. I wanted the truth, but I wanted the truth to be what I wanted to hear. That it would be okay.

I watch Gen's iphone's screen light up with Liam's picture, sending my stomach soaring.

"I kind of have to take this." She smiles grabbing her phone and walking towards the back.

"Thank god! I thought she'd never leave!" Maddie huffs, randomly appearing on Gen's side of the table.

"Did you just take the Lord's name in vain? I thought you were an angel?"

"i died young, so I get alot of pity. So, in turn I get to do what I want, but we don't need to talk about that."

"So why are you here?"

"I messed with fate. Liam's outside the restaurant coming to sit with you guys."

"Maddie! Haven't you watched those stupid time travel movies? You never mess with fate! It could alter the whole universe!"

She begins doubling over in laughter, "You actually believe in that sci-fi shit? Oh goodness, that's too entertaining."

I feel my jaw set like it does when I'm about to lose my temper, "Just go away, Gen's coming."

"Fine, but don't ever say I never helped you."

Gen comes back with her eyebrows knitted together, "That was weird. Liam decided to come eat with us," she moves her glance towards the door, "See? There he is."

I follow her emerald eyes over to the boy walking this way.

"Uh," I begin hyperventilating, "I-I don't know if I can do this. I-It-" I cut myself off as the tears begin to feel my eyes.

He was as beautiful as I remember. Short sandy hair stopping right before his eyebrows. His brown eyes still had the cheerful sparkle in them, even if his face doesn't crack a smile. He looked skinnier, like he hasn't been eating...

"Oh my god! He hasn't been eating!?" I shriek wiping the tears off my flushed cheeks.

"He hasn't been hungry..."

"that's a damn bad excuse. and you know it, Gen."

She looks down at her hands before greeting Liam, "Hey babe, how you feelin'?" She smiles puling him into the chair next to her.

"Uh, um, I'm not sure why I came... I can't do this."

I watch as he curls himself into a ball. The amount of pain in my chest, I couldn't even begin to describe in words. It was awful.

"It... was all my fault, Gen. She wouldn't have left if we didn't fight."

I didn't mean to speak, but the words just ended up spilling out of lips, "No. I, er- Megan wouldn't want you to think of it like that. She'd be upset if she even knew you had those thoughts in your head."

He looks up, "Who are you?"

"I'm Emily. One of Gen's friends."

I watch as his expression turned to pure anger, "What do you know anyway? You didn't even know her, so I'd appreciate it if you stayed out of it."

The tears came on so rapidly I didn't even had time to think about wiping them away, "I-I have to go. Bye Gen."

I run as fast as I could out of the restaurant and down the street.

I should've know better. Did I really think the first time I talked to him it would go perfect, and everything would just fall into place?

I just realized how in deep I am, and I'm just falling deeper into this hole I'm digging for myself.
