Rey walked through the crowded streets of the city, with her bag over her shoulder. She needed to steal something very valuable today so that she could get a good meal, she hadn't gotten much to eat in the past few days, and hunger still burned deep in the pit of her stomach. She could feel herself getting weaker, and she knew that she was on the brink of starvation.
She had grown so weak that her hands and legs would shake if she over exerted herself.
As she walked through the market place, so many delicious smells filled her nose, only serving to make her stomach feel emptier. She walked past a booth filled with fruit and her hunger took control as she reached into one of the baskets, taking an apple while the stall owner was busy with a customer. She walked away as quickly and casually as she could.
She took large ravenous bites of the apple as she continued walking through the narrow streets of the city. After she had finished eating her apple, she saw a wealthy man carrying an armful of scrolls. She pretended not to see him and bumped into him, sending his scrolls rolling across the street.
"I'm sorry," she apologized, bending down to help him retrieve the scrolls. As he was distracted, she snatched a purse full of gold from his belt.
The man nodded to Rey after she had helped him collect his lost scrolls, then he continued down the street.
Once he was gone Rey looked at the purse, it was heavy with coins, it should earn her a nice meal, with this much gold she would probably be able to feed herself well for months, apposed to the single simple meal that she would receive from Unkar. But if she didn't return, he would send a search party after her. As a runaway slave, she could suffer a terrible punishment.... she could even be imprisoned or put to death.
Unkar usually expected her to return with her bag full of valuables, but the gold was worth far more than the things that she usually brought. If he didn't think it was enough, she could always come back to the village to get more.
She turned and began to make her way back through the streets of the city, on her way back to the only home she had ever known, but Unkar's mansion was hardly a place she would describe as a home, it was closer to a prison. But at least the gold might earn her a nice meal and a little time to rest.
