Miss Laurie
It is finally time for awards so Mark and I head down to the ballroom. Everyone from our school is sitting together. We are a family school so we like to enjoy eachother's company.
I notice that some people are missing: Raegan, Conner, Brooklyn, Joe, and Maeve are not present and it is almost time to start. I see Kyle Gray crossing into the ballroom, with tears in his eyes and a scowl on his face. I run up to him.
"Hi. I'm Miss Laurie, Raegan and Conner's teacher." He looks at me like I've just offended his mother. And he says "Miss Laurie, I've done something bad." Then I remember what I saw from the window: how Raegan pushed Kyle into the pool, how mad she looked.
I wonder where Raegan is.
I say to Kyle "Do you want to talk about it?" God, I feel like a freaking therapist. "Sure, but can we go somewhere private?" We walk out the door, careful to avoid anyone. We finally come to a little waiting area with chairs and couches, and we each take a seat.
"Ok Kyle. Tell me what's wrong." I say to him. And then he tells me the whole story. He ends with "I did it for a very selfish reason: winning."
I feel like slapping this boy upside the head, but then I remember what I did when I was about his age. Instead I say to him "We all do stupid things sometimes. We just have to have the bad days so that the good ones can come through." He smiles at me.
We start back to the ballroom. Then a voice sounds "Kyle Gray, can you come to the stagehand?" He looks like he's about to vomit, but goes anyways. I grab him and say "Good luck." And he walks towards his fate.
