When we were both at the top of the mountain and had finally settled down Aster stared out beyond the skyline to see the city lights below us flicker on as the sun began to set.
"I don't remember this towns name," I turned to Aster, who was still memorized by the view, "but it's beautiful, isn't it." She nodded her head slowly without taking her eyes off of the city below us.
I joined her in admiring the lively lights below us and the tiny people that looked like ants working for their colony. A gust of wind blew, sending my and Aster's hair flying behind us, and the flower that Aster had kept in her hair the entire time blew away.
The sky was painted with purple and pink hues and the lights below looked like stars lighting up a dark city, spreading light and life to everyone who lived there.
"I wonder if the people feel trapped down there... because this city is surrounded by mountains." Aster finally looked away from the scene.
"It's not the mountains that would make them feel trapped, it's everyone else telling them they need to stay." I looked at Aster who seemed like she was about to start crying. Her face was beet red and her eyes were tired.
"Yea," she responded as she sat on the ground, dangling her feet off of the cliff side.
"What you said before... about how me saving your life wasn't related to the bullet. What did you mean?" I sat down next to her with my legs crossed, as something about dangling my feet off a cliff made me feel uneasy.
"I never told you this, but I wasn't an assassin working for the Leidenschaftlich army. I was working for the enemy." Aster searched my face for any reaction, but didn't find anything. I was never one to hold grudges about past wars. "My parents though, they supported the Leidenschaftlich army's efforts even though they lived in one of the neighboring countries, the ones that were at war with them. After they found out that I was assassinating many of the people that they supported, they began to see me as greedy, just as the war leaders were for Leidenschaftlich's resources. After the war, when I told them that my only wish was to be a traveling merchant, they though it was for the greed of money, when in reality, it had simply been my dream ever since I was a child."
"But what does-"
"Let me finish, idiot." Aster glared at me, then gave me a soft smile.
"So, eventually, I decided to run away, and make my dreams come true myself. When you found me my parents had figured out where I was and, had they found me, would have made sure I never left the house again. But, you found me instead and when you helped me with my injury, they lost track of me. So, basically, you saved my life," Aster looked back at the city lights below us and smiled with dull eyes.
"We should go back, though. It's going to be dark soon." Her voice wasn't as lively as it used to be.
"Plus, I'm tired" She slowly stood up, getting one last glance at the sunset before it disappeared behind another mountain, shrouding everything in darkness.
When we finally entered the city below us, it was dark, but even though the stars should have been out, only one was visible, due to the city lights.
It was the star next to the moon. The only one that was able to keep shining even though nobody needed it to.
