"Do we really need to hike all the way up a mountain just for you to see the city?" Aster groaned whilst she dragged herself along, barely able to keep up with me.
"The man at the fishing dock told us that this was the best place to overlook the city." I glanced back at her and saw that her head was down and she was furiously glaring at the ground.
"You know, this is your own fault for agreeing to come with me. You could have gone back to your home town, but nope! You had to follow me to the ends of the Earth because is supposedly saved your life." I puffed out my chest and sped up, causing Aster to be left behind. Her head slowly moved up, revealing her piercing glare.
"You did save my life, idiot. I never said that it was because of the bullet." Aster ran ahead on me and started sprinting towards the top of the mountain while I stood there dumbfounded
What did she mean it wasn't because of the bullet? I didn't do anything except for nurse her back to health. I thought as I watched her run up the mountain with new found determination.
"Aster! What do you mean!?" I yelled at her. She simply turned around and stuck her tongue out at me.
"How old are you, eight?" I yelled as I started my pursuit. While I ran up the side of the mountain, despite me being exhausted, I felt more alive than ever before. The wind would catch my hair and blow it behind me as if I were an eagle, freely soaring through the clouds with no boundaries. For just a moment, it felt like I could fly anywhere without the constraints of my lungs, or my muscles, or any part of my human body that wanted to keep me grounded. For just a moment, I could fly.
"Eighteen, actually." Aster glanced back at me with a huge smile on her face.
"You definitely look like you're eight!" I yelled back.
"How rude! Don't you know you're never supposed to joke about a woman's height! Learn to respect your elders." I heard her let out a huge laugh as she ran up the hill. She wasn't able to control it and had to stop running, to catch her breath again. As I passed her, I flicked her on the forehead again and she let out a small yelp, then continued to sprint after me at a significantly slower pace.
"You can't catch me, I'm almost at the top." I yelled at her without bothering to look back.
"I don't care... I'm tired," She whined, "running halfway up a mountain is a lot harder than it sounds."
"Well, it's not like running halfway up a mountain sounds easy."
"Exactly."
When I stopped running, suddenly the fatigue hit me and it felt like I could barely walk. I decided to stop for a second to catch my breath when Aster started sprinting at me full speed.
Once she passed me she yelled, "Last one to the top has to stop lying to themselves about how they feel about Violet Evergarden!" without even a glance back.
Before I could even finish catching my breath she was at the top waving an imaginary flag of victory.
