The winter winds caused the flames from the torches to flicker as Ella stood atop the Wall one evening of the full moon. Jon and Sam stood next to her as she pulled her hood over her head to block the chilling winds. The boys were on watch duty that particular evening, and Ella decided to keep them company. Asena and Ghost were locked away, per Ser Alliser's orders, and Ella was lonely.

"What's it like with her?" Sam asked, breaking the silence. "Your friend?"

"Well, she had red hair," Jon replied.

"No," Sam sighed. "I want to know what it's like to have someone. To be with someone. To love someone and them love you back."

Jon kept quiet as he hung his head. He kept a watchful eye on the horizon as the wind tosseled his black curls.

"Look, we're all going to die sooner than I hoped," Sam said. "You're the closest I'll ever get to knowing."

"I don't think it's appropriate to discuss these things in front of Ella," Jon stated.

"Jon, I've been around wildlings far too long. Those things are not inappropriate anymore." Ella retorted. "Just tell Sam what he wants to hear. I won't mind."

Jon huffed. "All right. But Sam, you mean to tell me that you and Gilly never?"

"Oh, no." Sam blushed. "She just had a baby. Besides, she never offered."

"If she had, would you?" Ella asked curiously. She wondered if Tormund had offered, if she would have accepted his invitation.

"You would have broken your vows to be with her?" Jon asked.

"The interesting thing is, our vows never specifically forbid intimate relations with a woman. " Sam ignored Jon's question.

"I shall take no wife," Sam quoted. "That's easy enough. The line of not fathering children is very specific. But what do our vows say of other activities? It's open to interpretation!"

"I don't think Ser Alliser cares too much for interpretation," Jon said, stepping away from the Wall's ledge.

Sam and Ella followed after Jon, descending the frozen staircase.

"Anyways," Sam said, "there's nothing for him to interpret. We didn't."

"So what's it like?" Sam asked as they strolled the icy top of the Wall. Ella was curious to know what it was like to be with someone as well, but she would not say that in front of Jon.

"There's this whole other person," Jon answered. "You're wrapped up in them. They're wrapped up in you. And for a little while, you're more than just you. Well, oh I don't know. I'm not a bleeding poet!"

"No," Ella chuckled. "You're really not."

"What did I get for all that mess, anyways?" Jon asked. "An arrow six inches from my heart."
