'Life isn't about finding yourself, life is about creating yourself.' -George Bernard Shaw
Valencia Valrez's entire world was quite ordinary. Until one mundane night, but how much can one uneventful night change?
A world of mystery and magic await...
Following the explosion, three men came through a wall of the room they were in. They had come in through a portal, but the portal was hardly visible through all the ruckus they created.
As soon as they entered, all the chairs and tables were turned over and as they scattered throughout the room they broke into pieces and flew across the room. Cayden and Conrad immediately stood in front of Valencia to protect her, Conrad holding up a protective shield to prevent any of the flying fragments from hitting them, but she saw her brother from behind the two; laying defenseless on the floor, as the men marched in.
It was as if time slowed down and Valencia ran to her brother to cover him but before she could do much, one of the men shot his magic at her. She flew back and hit the wall. Pain coursed through her as she fell to the ground. She felt disoriented and then the pain hit her so hard she felt like crying.
Valencia tried her best to sit up and heal her wounds. But nothing happened. Sharp jabs of pain were all over her body and it was getting harder to breathe.
As she was gasping for air, her brother's body was shoved onto her. It didn't make the situation better, but relief washed over Valencia. At least he was in her arms now. She got up and through the pain, finally registered the fight taking place in front of her.
By the amount of noise being created she wondered why no one else was trying to interfere in a fight taking place inside a hospital. But then she saw the red sheen on the walls and then understood that Conrad had probably put up a spell to ensure no one else could hear or see them right now.
Conrad was throwing red-yellow explosions everywhere, while another warlock threw blue flames at him. Words that Valencia couldn't comprehend were being thrown around along with the flames of color and if it wasn't violent, Valencia would've admired it.
On the other hand, Cayden was battling another one of the people with a dagger, while a third person was on the ground. After wrestling a while, Cayden succeeded in defeating his opponent. Then he stood there observing Conrad and the other warlock.
For a second, it seemed like Cayden was going to move away from the battling warlocks, but all he did was move back, aim and throw a knife in their direction.
Valencia watched as alarm took over her, realizing the fact that Conrad might get hurt. But a few seconds later, Conrad was standing still as his opponent dropped to the ground with a knife lodged in between his eyes. Conrad turned around, closed his eyes and few words later, the room was restored back to its normal state of being, as if nothing had happened.
Valencia stared in horror as the bodies slumped to the floor. She was happy the bad guys were being taken care of, but it was the first time she had seen someone die. It hurt her.
As all the fighting and noise was over, she was reminded of everything that had happened. How her parents were somewhere here, laying dead and of her motionless brother. It snapped her put of her dazed state.
She looked down at her brother and decided to take away any pain he might be in. However, when she tried to take away his pain, she felt nothing. It wasn't odd, as he had just been shoved. But something in her suddenly went cold and she felt like something had happened to him and she was unsure of what. Maybe it was just sisterly instinct or maybe it was paranoia, but she bent down to check for a pulse. She felt nothing reach her fingertips. With trembling fingers, she tried again.
But, she couldn't find one.
Horror filled her and she placed her hand over his chest to feel a heartbeat, but just like the pulse, she was greeted with utter silence.
Conrad and Cayden watched silently as she broke down for the second time that day. She wanted to scream and shout. Or just jump out of this world. But she had no idea what to do. She felt lost and empty. She didn't know what to do and what not to. She just sat there letting the tears swallow her. Maybe, they'd drown her.
Conrad gently lifted her brother up and placed him on the bed he magicked in from another room and then examined him. Valencia tried to see if he would turn up with a conclusion different from what she had come to but when he turned around with his head bent down, Valencia let go of the sliver of hope she was trying to hold on to.
He walked over to Valencia and sat down beside her, checking her for any pain or injuries. There were none. He was very interested in finding out what exactly she was to have the abilities she had revealed and what more she hid. But for now, Conrad let her cry and grieve over the loss of her loved ones.
On the other hand, Cayden not knowing how to deal with emotional people walked over to the bodies and started going through their pockets, searching for who they were.
One of them was a warlock and the other two were members of the Pures. It was sickening how the first thing on their identification cards was that they were a part of a society that tore apart families of people just because they were different. Probably, the sadder part was that they were so proud of it. Why a warlock was working with the people that were supposed to kill him was an intriguing mystery. Perhaps the Pures has threatened the warlock's loved ones. But he was a warlock and could have easily fought them. Maybe not. However Cayden knew he had to know the reason the warlock was roped into this community.
Cayden wondered why the Pures attacked them at the hospital. Conrad and him did not have any specific enemies. Maybe it was Valencia. Maybe the fire wasn't an accident. Someone wanted to get rid of Valencia. They hadn't done a very good job at achieving that, since she was still here surrounded with dead loved ones and two strangers.
Knowing Conrad, Valencia wouldn't have to worry about finding a job and a home. He would help her with that. He probably would teach her how to be a proper witch as well.
What the main problem was Valencia herself. Cayden believed that, if people wanted her dead, she would be the reason they would never find peace again, until she or they all were dead.
