The day of the funeral was dark. Not dark in a way that it was cloudy outside but because of what the day entailed. Till now a small part of Valencia held on to the sliver of hope that everything that had happened so far was all a lie or a dream and that she'd wake up soon. Maybe it was all a cruel joke. But now she had to say goodbye to her family. She would see them for the last time and then that was it. She had last seen them at the hospital and the image of their burnt bodies still haunted her. She would have to live the rest of her immortal life without them. Without their love, their affection, their warmth and kindness.
Valencia got out of bed, wiping away a few tears determined to not cry again. It was embarrassing the amount of times she had cried. She put on the black dress that came along with the closet full of clothes Conrad had provided her with. She couldn't be bothered to do much with her hair so she just put it up in a bun. She got out of her room, for the first time in two days and let herself admire the view in front of her. The hall was decorated beautifully and was lavish to say the least.
The walls were brown and had golden designs from the ceiling to the floor. One side of the room had a wall length window that looked out into the porch. The porch was pretty simple. On the left side of the hall was a small open kitchen. It just had a counter, stove and a fridge. It seemed untouched and noticing the amount of take out packages littered on the kitchen counter you could understand why the rest of the kitchen was that neat. There was a painting of fruits on the wall of the kitchen and it was beautiful.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw Conrad come and he just walked to the small table at the corner of the room and poured out a glass of water.
"I know all of this is overwhelming, but I need to put a concealment spell on you. I'm sorry but I cannot risk you being recognised out there." He said as he handed her the glass of water.
"What? Why not? I need to see my friends. You know that." She said surprised at how hoarse her voice was. She felt angry too as she stared at him and wondered why she was letting this stranger help her and then forbid her from whatever hope of sanity she had left.
Conrad answered, patient as ever "I have reason to believe that the target on your back hasn't been removed and until that's done, you have to be protected. I have successfully made everyone believe you are missing and anyone who cares will be looking out for a girl with long, curled brown hair and blue eyes. Not someone who's a red head and has green eyes."
Valencia was now glaring at him. "I'm going to my family's funeral as myself. I don't care if I die out there. And I want to be with my friends too. So I will be with them!" With that she stormed her way to the front door and yanked it open with all her might. But it slammed shut and so she tried opening it again. She turned around to see Conrad whispering words she didn't understand and felt rage pulse through her like never before.
Conrad stopped casting the spell and then started speaking calmly again " Like I said, it's too dangerous. These people, the ones who want to kill you, will kill your friends and me if they see that you are under my protection. And I don't think you'd want to shoulder the burden of my death. Or your freinds' for that matter."
Valencia just stood there, defeated. She knew he was right and that she shouldn't be so selfish and get more of her loved ones killed. "Why? Why are they after me!? And you?"
Conrad sighed. "It's a long story, but they hate us supernaturals. They hate us for what we are. That's it. And they have gotten pretty strong in the past few years. Their connections increased and even though we know we are powerful enough to destroy them, we also have the duty to protect put young ones. And the humans who would die just because two communities couldn't set aside their differences."
