Nine

Flashback

Location: Daegu Fatima Hospital, Sinam-dong, Dong-gu

Taehyung happily walks inside the room of one of his favorite patients, Annie.

She's a six-year old Irish who's hospitalized due to her heart ailment. At the very young age, the child was diagnosed with a huge hole in her heart that makes her faint every now and then especially when she gets too exhausted.

The beautiful doctor entered with a bright smile on his face, immediately seeing the little girl playing with her doll while her nanny is busy arranging her things.

"Hey there, baby." Taehyung greeted, patting the little girl on her head, who smiles enthusiastically to him.

"Doctor!" Annie stood on her bed to give her a huge bear hug. "Annie miss you so much." She said, clinging to Taehyung.

The doctor smiled, caressing the little ones back. "I miss you too, baby."

Taehyung had been away for a week because of a conference he had to attend to with the other doctors. During those times, substitute doctors take care of his patients.

"Have you been a good girl?" He asked, cupping Annie's small face with his hands.

Her nanny butts in, "Dr. Kim, she's been a very good girl when you're away. She said she needs to be good or else you won't come back."

The little girl nodded her head vigorously. "Yes, doctor. Annie didn't run or do tiring things." She lifted her baby doll, and continued "I just played with Maria. Isn't she pretty?" Annie proudly showed her baby doll to him.

Taehyung giggled at the child's cuteness. "Yes, she's pretty just like you." He caressed the child's blonde locks and remembered something.

"Oh, I almost forgot. I have a gift for you, baby." Taehyung grabbed a small box from his lab coat.

Annie shrieked in delight. She jumps up and down on her bed in too much happiness.

"Baby, no jumping." Taehyung said, eyes gleaming in happiness at the little one's eagerness.

Annie took the gift and opened it. Her eyes shine brightly, looking at the hair accessory that he bought for her.

"It's beautiful, doctor!" She clutched the object in her chest, smiling so bright to Taehyung.

"I'm glad you like it." Taehyung pinched her chubby cheeks.

"I love it!" Annie beamed, hugging Taehyung once more. "Thank you, doctor." She whispered, kissing him on the cheek.

Taehyung smiled, "No problem, baby. Anything for you. Just be a good girl okay?" He reminded.

Annie nodded her head. "I'll be a good girl, doctor. I'll be a very good girl so I can be better."

Taehyung chuckled, "Promise?" He lifted his pinky finger and Annie did the same.

"Promise, doctor." They linked their fingers together, sealing their promise.

"And I promise I will help you get better, baby." Taehyung whispered.

They had few more talks before Taehyung said his goodbye to visit another patient.

Everything is normal. Taehyung continues to check on his patients everyday, until that one fatal night.

Taehyung was busy cleaning his house. This is what he does during his day off. However, he was interrupted by the ringing of his telephone.

He immediately took the call, only to be rushed out of his house, straight into the hospital.

The person on the other line informed him that Annie has been having chest pains. She's having a hard time breathing and her heart seems to be skipping a beat.

Taehyung quickly dressed and drove to the hospital, his heart racing out of his chest. He sped up, the car almost went flying. The usual thirty minute became half, as he speeds up.

Upon reaching the hospital, he dashed to the ER but it was too late. When he arrived, he saw how the child's heart rate stopped, turning into a straight line.

Taehyung felt his heart drop, as the doctor and nurses inside shake their head, silently saying that the child is gone.

He slowly walks toward Annie, who's body is lying on the hospital bed with a lot of tubes and wires attached to her.

Taehyung fell on the floor, sobbing his heart out as he saw a familiar object on the child's hand.

It was the gift he gave her.

"No...baby" Taehyung cried, feeling so sorry for the child who died at such an early young age.

He blames himself, even though the situation is beyond his control. Annie's heart illness is a traitor. One day she's okay, and the other day she's not. It attacks whenever they least expected, just like today.

His heart clenches in pain, realizing that he wasn't able to fulfil his promise to her.

"I'm sorry." He cried out, clasping the small hand of the now dead child.

Annie's death had a huge impact on him. He lost his will to be a doctor, thinking that he's a failure. He had to quit before he can do another mistake again.

It took him years before he was able to stand back again in life. He tried burrying what happened so he can live a normal life. However, at the back of his mind, Annie's image still haunts him.

And Taehyung doesn't know that this will come haunting him again in the present.
