El had coughed for the 5th time in a minute and Mike was starting to get really worried.

Recently, El had been coughing a lot more than a person usually does.

"El, are you sure your okay? Please just tell me and be honest, that's why I'm here." Mike asked, pleading for her to fess up. El nodded, "Mike, I'm good." She fibbed right through her teeth.

Hopper's smoking.

Mike had no clue how much Hopper smoked, and El was now effected by it.

"I know you're lying to me. I know how you act when you lie." Mike frowned. "You can just tell me, I won't judge you or hurt you."

"Fine!" El exclaimed, placing her hand on Mike's and then she coughed again. "Allergies." She stated simply. Mike rolled his eyes, "El, allergies don't have that much to do with coughing, maybe I don't know but I know you're lying straight to my face!"

El coughed, trying to catch her breath to speak. "I can't tell you." She said, and then coughed again.

"Okay, I promise to keep it and I don't lie." Mike told her.

"Little white paper things." El fessed and looked at Mike flushing madly.

"Are you talking about the things that Hopper blows on?" Mike asked. El nodded. "Oh, those are called cigarettes. They're super bad for your lungs and they smell disgusting. El- Please say you'll talk to Hopper about it?" He pleaded, worriedly.

El shook her head no. "He'll get mad." "Then I'm telling my mom." Mike declared, going to get up to call for his mom. El quickly latched onto his arm. "Please don't do this!" She begged.

"No, you need to get help. You could die! I-I don't want to lose you..." Mike argued. "El, I really need you to get help... I-I l-love y-you..." He kissed her and hugged her tightly.
"Love you too." El smiled. "Fine. Call for help." She agreed and sighed, then coughed.

Mike ran downstairs to go get his mom. "Hey mom, El keeps coughing and she says its because of cigarettes and I'm worried for her." Mike cried.

Karen Wheeler stood up. "Oh, bring her down here!"

Mike ran upstairs and led El down to his mom and of course El coughed.

"El, how about you stay here for a few days? I'm positive Mike won't mind. Maybe staying away from the cigarettes will help and I will try to get the chief to stop smoking, okay?" Karen smiled down at El. She nodded and then turned to Mike and smiled.

"I'm staying!" She exclaimed, giving him a huge hug. Karen grabbed her purse and keys, then head out.

"Well, be good. I need to go run a few errands..."

El coughed and the tweens both waved and Karen Wheeler left.

~| one week later |~

Mike and El stood on the porch of her small isolated cabin. El had done the secret knock on her door and finally a drunk Hopper had answered.

"We have a lot to talk about." Hopper stated, anger filled his voice. El stepped into her house once Hopper had moved out of the doorway. Mike tried to come in but Hopper slammed the door in his face. Mike turned around, looking dreary, but suprisingly his mother came up with him to listen in.

"Kid, I am SO disappointed at you right now! You go off to that Wheeler kid- "His name is MIKE!" El interrupted. "Whatever his name is; and you SLEPT with him! You tell his own mother that you're having problems with MY smoking and get her all concerned about it. It's just a bunch of BULLSHIT Eleven." Hopper yelled. "DON'T CALL ME THAT!" El shouted back. "You don't understand! Your little paper things are making me cough! I don't want to die!"

"I swear if Mike told you that you're going to die because of this I'm going to BEAT HIM UP the second I see him again." Hopper yelled with pure anger. "NO! Hopper you can't do this!" El screamed, tears streaming down her face.

"You're grounded, FOR LIFE. You're never talking to that Wheel kid again!"

"But Hopper I love him! You can't keep me from someone I LOVE!" El cried. "I'm going to lock you in your room until you learn how to RESPECT ME!" Hopper yelled.

Karen stood, speechless outside. "Michael, we have to help her..."

Mike knew El's room had no windows so he had to go around the side.

"Mom, we have to break the window." Mike cried. His mother shook her head. "That's illegal he's the police chief, Michael."

"But I have to save El, I can't leave her there! What if she gets cancer? She's getting ABUSED." Mike yelled.

"If you're not going to help me break the window, I will do it myself."

Karen was in shock with what her son was about to do for this girl.

There was nothing around in Mike's sight for something to break the window, so he had to get creative.

He looked for the largest tree branch he could find and then tied his mother's car keys to it. He took another branch and linked them together with a ponyband from Karen.

Mike tried and tried to whack the window to break it.

El had tears gushing out her eyes. Hopper was screaming at her and she heard loud thuds coming from the window. Through the curtains there was a shadow, it looked an awful lot like Mike.

With enough concentration, she blocked out Hopper's words and the window shattered into a million shards of glass. Mike climbed through and watched as El wiped away the stream of blood dripping from her nose.

"Get OUT of my house!" Hopper screamed, "I can arrest you, you know!"

"Hopper, DON'T PLEASE! I- El's words were interrupted by a large amount of coughing. Abnormally long coughing.

"El, are you okay?" Mike asked, hurrying over to El.

"No, I'm, losing, my- breath." El gasped, trying to catch air and she kept coughing.

"We need to get her to a hospital, QUICK!" Mike shouted, he picked up El and carried her to the nearest exit. His mother helped him out.

"Where do you think you're taking my daughter?" Hopper's loud voice boomed.
"Your daughter? After what you just did to her!" Mike yelled.

"I let her come into MY home! I was the FIRST one to let her stay!" Hopper screamed at Mike. "She should be GRATEFUL and not giving ME SHIT."

"Correction; Mike was actually the first one. But go off sis." My inner voice boomed.

"You must've never known that I found her alone in the middle of the night in the freezing cold rain and took her into my house! Anyways, that's BEYOND the point, this girl has been coughing NONSTOP. So I'm taking her to the urgent care. You smell like goodwill, BYE." Mike yelled back.

"YOU SHOP AT GOODWILL, HI!"

"You know what you look like?"

"Si?"

"POOR!"

Mike's mind: I remember thinking, I'm about to beat this bitch up.

an: that part about goodwill never happened, but uh watch the video at the top.

Mike made a run for life as he carried El to his car and climbed into the backseat.

       "Mike?"

        "Yea?"

    "I love you."

El coughed again. Mike and his mother got her safely to an urgent care. Luckily, she was in the clear for lung cancer but if she's around smoking things could escalate. El ended up staying at Mike's for another two weeks, and Hopper got therapy for his smoking habit. El moved back in with Hopper and things turned out great.
