I walked through the corridors of school. I felt so much more aware than usual.
It was Monday, 3 days after what had happened. I haven't talked to nor seen Elijah since that day. I didn't want to see him. I didn't want to be apart of... whatever he was doing.
I inhale deeply and walk to my locker. I just stare at my books almost forgetting where I was. I completely blanked out but regained focus when I heard someone screaming my name from behind. Startled, I turn around without hesitation.
I seen Maya running towards me, pushing through everybody in her way, with her arms spread wide out for a hug. She slammed right into me almost causing me to fall backwards. I felt a smile spread across my lips. I felt safe in her hug, the same hug I've known since the sixth grade. I was more at ease now.
When we pulled apart, she spoke before I could even breathe.
"Thank god you're okay. I was worried sick about you!" She blurted as she lost her smile.
Maya was like a second mom to me. Since my mom is barely around to look after me, Maya's always there to take her place.
"I'm so sorry. I was going to call you, but my step-dad took my phone since I got home later than I was supposed to." I said as I also started to lose my smile.
"Listen, we'll talk about this at lunch. The bell's going to ring." She sighed. Before turning around, she gave a gentle smile and a wave.
As she left, I grabbed my books and walked to first period.
The bell rang just as I walked through the door almost as if it were on cue. Nobody looked as me as I sat down, not even the teacher. It was almost as if I were invisible.
I sat in the back again and starred at the back of Elijahs head.
A sudden rush of anxiety came over me, pulling me to my past. In around 2010, I had a perfectly normal family, a biological mother, father, and a pet dog. My mom and dad got along just fine. They barely fought, and if they did they'd resolve their dispute in seconds. We spent a lot of family time together. Nonetheless my parents were the best at parenting. At night I'd have this fear of a "monster in my closet" as all typical 9 year-olds have. My father would come in each night and say "I'll protect you from the monsters" or "I'll make sure the monsters leave".. soon enough, he became that monster. Drugs and alcohol started coming into the house. Day by day he'd start getting angrier and more abusive, mentally and physically. The police started to get involved. My father always kept his promises, that being said, he kept the promise about "keeping the monsters away." I woke up one morning to just my mother. I kept asking "where's daddy?" And the only response I'd get was "he'll be back soon." A week past by and he was still nowhere to be found. Those weeks turned into months and those months turned into years. Nine years past by and he's still gone, he's been replaced and the monster is gone.
"Y/n, please pay attention to the discussion." Mr. Matthews said sternly.
My thoughts dissolved into a classroom full of teenagers staring at me and an angry middle-aged teacher.
"Sorry, Mr. Matthews." I mumbled underneath my breath as I bury my face into a textbook.
As the teacher starts his lecture again, I get a text. Who would text me during school hours?
Unknown number: Hey ;)
Me: Who's this?
Unknown number: ladyslayer123
I look ahead of me and see that Elijah was also on his phone on the iMessage app. I roll my eyes and change his name to 'Elijah' with around ten eye roll emojis.
Me: how'd you get my number, Elijah?
Elijah: I have my ways. Meet me at Quick Shop on Brigg St. at 5pm.
Me: why? That place has been abandoned for years.
Elijah: Don't ask questions.
