Mara POV

*September 3 2014*

I wake up to the sound of my alarm clock blaring through my room. I glance at the clock, 6:45 am.

It's September 3rd today, not only that, but also the first day of my senior year. And I couldn't be more exited. You see, I have a real distaste for summer. With all the bugs and the heat it's just not my cup of tea. Now, with autumn just around the corner and school starting back up, I'm happy.

I get up to enter the shower, but before that I text my best friend, Oakley, to see if she needs a ride to school.

Me: Morning Ley, do you need a ride to school?

Oakley: Yeah, do you want to come by at 8?

Me: Sure, I'll pick you up breakfast too.

Oakley: That works thanks!

Oakley's parents don't let her drive because she is a really bad driver and it's better to be safe, so I pick her up most days, and I'm totally cool with it. It's carpooling in a way, go environment!

After I shower I throw on a blue sweater with a white collar, and a pair of black skinny jeans with a pair of black oxfords to go on my feet. I also put on my signature locket with and "M" embroidered on it. After I get dressed I put my dark hair into a braided bun, and walk down to the kitchen.

My mom is already there eating breakfast. "Morning Mara, would you like some breakfast?" my mom says, holding up a blender filled with already made smoothie, "No I'm okay I was going to stop by the café to grab something, then I'm going to go pick up Oakley, if that's okay?" I say, "Yeah for sure, but you should get going soon then."

"How is it already 7:45?!" I cried after looking at the clock on the oven. "Bye mom!" I say grabbing my navy jansport backpack and then running through the front door.

I run into my grey BMW and quickly drive into town. When I finally get to the café I go inside and get two teas, a bagel for myself and a croissant for Oakley.  From there I drive to Oakley's house and she's already on her porch waiting for me.

For the first day of school Oakley decided to wear dark blue skinny jeans, and a salmon colored knitted sweater with a light brown infinite scarf. She curled her long chocolate copper colored hair and put a bow in it. Then she has put on long brown boots, with her matching brown leather backpack.

I glance down at the clock and see that it's 8:09 am. When she climbs in I say a chorus of "sorry" for being late, and she just laughs and says, "It's okay Mara, you're late for everything, I expect it after 10 years of knowing you." I playfully roll my eyes at her, and start eating my bagel while pulling out of her driveway.

"So how was your family night?" she asks me after taking a bite of her croissant. "It was fun, Sterling, Krista and Auggie came in from North Chester last night, but also left last night," I reply.

You see, Sterling is my 25 year old brother and his wife is Krista, who is the same age. They have a 3 year old son named August, but we all call him Auggie. They live in a city called North Chester just 40 minutes away. Students from North Chester are about 97% of our school. Oakley and I, along with about seven other families take up the other 3%. We live in a prestigious town that goes by the name of Shield, and the school we all attend is called Shield Preparatory Academy. It's quite the commute for the NC (North Chester) students, but our school is definitely worth it. With about 600 students, it is rated one of the best schools in North America.

Shield is an odd town. It's got a population of about 60, all of which are multi-millionaires who live in extravagant mansions, and barely spend time in the town in itself. We have one café, a few tiny shops, a book store, and of course a hospital, dentist, police station and fire hall. The supermarket is the size, if not smaller than most of our houses. Most people who own these places are people who come in North Chester, and the majority of the employees and customers consist of Shield prep students looking for something to do after school.

We have a giant park though, placed in the center of the town. This park has three fountains, a bunch of gazebos, an assortment of amazing statues, and many benches placed in the best spots, giving a beautiful views from each of them. It's perfect.

"Cool, cool. Wow how long has it been Roman has been in town?" Oakley asks. Roman is my older-younger brother, he is 20 years old and lives in New York City going to Columbia university. "I'm not even sure, but he said that he might come down for Thanksgiving weekend." Roman is also Oakley's older brother Ashton's best friend.

At this point I have already pulled into the student parking lot. We walk through to courtyard but Oakley has to go talk to Charlotte Pemperton the head cheerleader to confirm her spot on the cheerleading team. Charlotte is also a Shielder (That's what they call the few of us who live in Shield.) and she is a classic mean girl. She's the most popular girl in school, and treats anyone who is not on the same "social status" as her terribly.

Lost in my thoughts I run into someone. I fall backwards, landing on my bottom. The person I ran into seems to have a tall rock as a body. I look up, already saying sorry, to see that the person I ran into is none other than Landon Sparks. He's also a Shielder, and also the classic jock. He's captain of the basketball team, tall and strong, and dating the head cheerleader. Our school basically proves stereotypes.
