Mara POV
November 14 2014

“So have you asked anyone yet?” I ask Oakley who is sitting across from me in the courtyard, “No, but fortunately it won’t take long; we don’t exactly have many options to choose from.”
Tonight is big night, it is the hundredth anniversary of the town of Shield. In honour of that, the town is throwing a huge centennial gala that Oakley’s dad is holding in one of the many massive ballrooms at his hotel.
“Well you have Landon, Jaden, and Logan to choose from.” I say to Oakley.
You see, ever since we were young, the parents of all the kids that live in Shield decided that since we have so many galas and parties it would make sense that our dates were only other young Shielders, ridiculous I know; but since this is being held specifically in honour of Shield, our parents are really enforcing it.
“Wait and Scott! That’s who I’ll take.” Oakley decides suddenly, “Sorry Ley, he and I already going together. I asked him already.” I say.
“But Mara you and I are both extremely awkward, but with guys, times my feelings of awkwardness by 1000! Scott is the only one I kinda know.” She says.
“I know Ley, and I’m really sorry it’s just that the only other guy that I know is Logan, and I’ve gone with him to these things since we were five, while you’ve always got to go with Scott. I’m really sorry, but maybe you can take Landon or Jaden?” I say, followed by Landon and Scott coming out of nowhere, then Landon says “I would go with you Oakley, but I promised Charlotte back when we were dating, and I have to keep my word no matter how hard it will be.”
“Okay, it will be an awkward evening, but how about Jaden?” she offers.
“Nope, already taken, by me!” Gwen annouces, while sitting down. “I know he’s a basketball player and all, but his amazing looks make it okay!” she says.
It’s just silence at our table now because we know who Oakley has to go with. “Logan.” Is all she groans, and I respond “Oakley it's okay. You know what, it’s not a big deal. I’ll just go with him!”
“No Mara, that’s not fair.” Oakley replies, “Oh, and I already put our names on the guest list together so there’s no going back. I’m really sorry Ley, I heard what happened at Bell’s party!” Scott chimes in.
“It’s okay, no need to panic, it is just one night.” She says more to herself, then gives a little nod, and says it again. “It's really okay guys; don’t worry. I better go find him, lunch is almost over.”

“Okay we have exactly 1 hour and 14 minutes until we have to be ready.” I say to Oakley. We are currently in her room about to start getting ready for the gala.
We turn on the radio Ley has in her room and Paul Otten’s ‘Girl You’re Alright’ starts playing. I start to pull out my gown to show Oakley.
For tonight I have chosen a sleeveless midnight blue gown, with a lacy illusion neckline. “It’s really nice!” Oakley says, “How bout mine?” she asks holding up her black lacy gown, that has a v neckline and a slit thatlooks like it will go to about mid-thigh.
“It’s really pretty Ley, but it doesn’t really seem like your style…?”
“Well I figured since the cliché thing to do on a sad day is wear dark colours, I found it appropriate.” She says with a shrug. “Maybe I’m being dramatic. Tonight will be good…. Right?” She asks me, “Right.” I reply sternly and we get started on our hair.

“Girls, you look amazing!” Maple White-Spruce exclaims to us, “Thanks mom!” Oakley responds. “You look really nice too Mrs. White-Spruce!” I say to her. Then she says she forgot her earrings, so she leaves the foyer to go retrieve them.
5:51 pm
There’s a knock at the door, and Oakley opens it revealing a very handsome looking Logan Bell. “Hello Oakley, you look really amazing!” Logan says “Mara,” he adds, looking at me. “Logan you look nice too.” Oakley says quietly, and what was that? Did I just see the Logan Bell blushing? “Well I should get home before Scott comes to pick me up.” I say. I nod to Oakley giving a silent ‘good luck’ and leave the house.
