Alone

I have been laying in the snow for an hour now, an hour since they left. I cursed myself for the immediate effect loneliness had on me. It made my muscles coil. My heart tighten. My good spirits retreat to the shadows.

Letting out a heavy sigh, I finally got up, bending over to get the bag of logs. It would be heavy in my human form, but was light work for my vampire. I decided I had enough energy to warp back to the cabin.

Warping was like entering a different dimension. I stepped out of my old skin mid-movement and once my foot touched the ground, the world turned black and white. Everything was bended and blurred. As soon as I arrived at the cabin, I stepped back into reality, feeling the delayed jolt of the warp. My vision cleared up and color bled back into world like the rush of water. It may have seemed like 20 minutes passed, but in actuality it was half a second.

I hummed a faint tune I made up awhile back from the little sounds in the woods. It was birds singing in the morning, bees buzzing in the evening, and cicadas at night. Locking all five locks on the door, I made my way over to the wood shelf above the fireplace, dodging our brown couches and chairs. I just narrowly missed tripping over the folded corner of Jackson's hunted and hand made bear skin rug. He loved the thing, but I though it was creepy- well aleast the underside of dried skin.

After restocking the shelf with the logs neatly and lighting a cozy fire, I shifted. It wasn't painful like it used to be. I couldn't feel my elongated teeth sliding back into my gums or my graceful bones shrinking anymore. The melanin returned to my skin and my once hauntingly beautiful features, roughened out, red orbs fading into a hue of swirling grey and green.

Looking around, I realized I was truly alone. There was probably someone out there worse off than me, so I decided not to throw a pity party like a child. I am a mature almost young adult, I reminded myself. And with that, I marched up to my room and hopped in the shower.

After I got out it was dark outside, the sun long since replaced by the moon. I put on a black shirt and leggings. Humming once more, I dried my hair, putting it back into a low bun. The dryer kept making a weird noise I couldn't exactly explain. Giving it the evil eye, I toyed with the buttons, turning it on and off. Even off it made the same-

"What that-" There was a series of thuds followed by a groan of pain. In the next second I shifted and warped to the top of the stairs in a blur, getting into a defensive stance, fangs out and red eyes glowing angrily.

There was a boy at the bottom of the stairs, his clothes shredded in places and barely intact. He looked up at me with unadulterated fear, scurrying away as if I ment to drain him dry. My vampire reveled in his fear, fed off it hungrily. I took a step back then two forward, fighting with every ounce of control I built over the years. I snarled at him. The boy, filthy and covered in various cuts and bruises, took the hint and began crawling backwards with whimpers of pain, leaving a trail of-

I warped before I even registered it, jolting violently at the suddeness of being ripped back into reality. I gripped his leg to drag him backwards, but as soon as my pale skin met the battered flesh of his ivory ankle, it felt as if I overdosed. I saw the past and present and future. I saw tears and blood and hands slipping. I saw everying and it all included him.

It was too much and maybe I did overdose. My eyes rolled back and then- well there was nothing. Just darkness.

 Just darkness
