Today is Independence Day, meaning we have to go to my moms house. We were invited but still, I haven't seen my mom or Trent Grayson's party. That feels like so long ago.
It's really because Delilah and I have been busy since then, she's dealing with everything with her book and I've been getting ready for school. It feels so weird getting back in the classroom but I'm so glad it's doing something I love.
Basically we haven't left the house in 2 weeks other than for work purposes but we've gotten a lot of use out of our babysitter. We usually have Veronica come over for small things but ever since we found out that she and my dad have been going out we haven't really spoke to her. We don't know what to say honestly.
We're mostly over everything else that happened, Delilah said she's actually happy that it was revealed she was pregnant then because in the past 2 weeks her belly has grown a lot and it would be hard to hide so she's even wearing a tighter fit dress today just to show it off. It's a cute little thigh length, peach dress. She bought it a couple years ago and never wore it, I think she's wearing it today because it's the tightest dress she has that will fit."Okay kids! Let's go! Time to get this party moving!" She shouts from the bottom of the stairs. I grab our beach bag from off the couch and double check for towels and sunscreen. Apparently after my mom and Trent got married they moved into a really great house with a pool. The invite said pool party in big letters. One by one the kids come down, Violet with a cutie pink dress on, her bathing suit sticking out of the top and then the boys both with their swim trunks on and T-shirt's.
"Were all ready then, right?" I ask them as I ruffle Grayson's hair.
"Yup." Violet nods and we begin our way to Delilah's car. We've only used it once in the 2 weeks that she's had it so I'm kind of excited to get in it. I told her I would drive since it's a new place and it's always easier if I drive and she navigates. I put the bag in an empty seat and then help Grayson in the back seat as Delilah helps Asher.
"Okay guys, were going to grandmas house. I know you haven't seen her much so she's going to be kind of new. Just be nice, okay?" Delilah explains as I start the car.
"Yeah and her husband Trent, what do they call him?" I ask her and she shrugs.
"Grandpa Trent?"
"Let's let my mom figure that out. We have half an hour before we get to Pasadena, let's just take time to appreciate that." I sigh and begin driving.
"Are you sure you wanna do this? 7 years is a long time not to see your own mom and to go to a family event like this.."
"It's fine, D. The kids need to see her and I need to get over everything that happened. My dad did, what does it say about me if I can't look past it?" I shrug.
"I guess. Just please try not to have an out burst."
"What is that supposed to mean?" I ask.
"Well, Brendon-you got drunk at a child's birthday party and freaked out. The 4th of July is a time that people usually get drunk. All I'm saying is, let's try not to let it happen again." She explains. I'm a little offended that she thinks I'm going to freak out again. There's a difference between seeing your mother after 7 years unexpectedly and freaking out and actually driving to her house.
"I'm thirsty!" Asher whines, interrupting my thoughts.
"Did you pack any drinks?" Delilah asks me, turning around to reach for the bag.
"No. They have drinks at the party. Why would I pack drinks?" I ask as the same time Asher whines again.
"For that reason." She looks at me.
"There's drinks at the party buddy, okay? We're almost there. Can you wait a little?" I look at him through the rearview mirror. He just huffs and crosses his arms as he does every time he doesn't get his way and I roll my eyes.
When we get there, my mom sees our car and waves at us. We park next to a couple other cars and get out, helping the boys out and then Violet let's herself out.
"Brendon. It's so good to see you!" She sings and hugs me and I'm already uncomfortable. It's too early for all this.
"Delilah, I see you're belly has popped." She turns to Delilah and places a hand on her stomach. "Any movements?"
"Not yet but the doctor said with this being my 4th pregnancy it could be any day now." She smiles and turns to the car to grab the bag.
"This is a nice car. When Delilah posted the picture on Instagram I nearly drooled." She laughs. She turns her attention from the car to Violet.
"Hey grandma." She smiles, placing her phone in her pocket.
"I'm so excited to see you. It's been so long. What grade are you going in to?" She asks.
"5th." Violet says. I decide I don't need to be apart of this conversation and take the boys to the porch where Trent is.
"Brendon! How are you?" He asks, opening his arm for a hug but I dodge it, placing Asher in his hand.
"He's thirsty. You should get him a juice." I tell him and he nods.
"I wanna go swim." Grayson says from behind me.
"The pool is on the deck buddy." Trent informs him. "Follow me." He says in some cartoon character style voice that makes Grayson smile but me want to vomit. I stand on the porch and wait for Delilah, my mom and Violet.
