Ah, yes. Thanksgiving, one of the most chaotic times of the year. And this year, Delilah and I hosting it. And we're hosting it for everyone.
She's been so stressed out lately because of everything that happened a couple weeks ago. Hopefully having all of her close friends and family near will make her happier. She just can't seem to get over all of it. It's frustrating because I try to assure her that the matter is over and she won't have to worry about anyone ever again. But then she reminds me of that Blake guy and the pizza delivery girl who hurt her as well and I can't even argue. This year has been crazy for her and I wish I could fix it. Plus, on top of all of it, she's heavily pregnant.
Today is the day before thanksgiving and she's trying her hardest to get everything prepared for it, it seems like it's being a good distraction for now. Both of our moms are coming early to help her get stuff done and my only job is the turkey.
Delilah always hated being woken up early by my mom because she thought it was ridiculous but she laughed earlier when she realized how right she was to wake her up that early. As I sit in my office, trying to grade some homework I can't help but reminisce over Delilah and I's long history together. I love all 4 of my children but I can't help but to go back to when we were newlyweds, trying our best to figure our lives out.
"Brendon, my car isn't starting." Delilah sighs on the other end of line. We just bought that car, what could be wrong with it?
"Maybe it's the battery. Where are you?" I ask, sitting up at my desk. My last class of the day starts in like 5 minutes.
"Ugh." She groans before answering that she was shopping.
"I have a class in 5 minutes." I tell her and I hear her groan again.
"It's fine. I can call a tow truck-or something." I can see the worry line on her face even now. I can't let her get her car towed. I'll just cancel my lesson plan for the day and tell them I'll be back in half an hour.
"No-I'm coming to help." I assure her. She instructs me not to come back I can tell she wants me to come help her and I'm not leaving my wife stranded in a parking lot for an hour. I ask where she's at and when she texts me her location I inform my class that I need to head out for a moment and leave the classroom. I decide to let my coworker Jane know that I need her to keep an eye on things while I'm gone and luckily she asks no questions and heads inside my room.
When I arrive at her car she's messing around under the hood, I showed her a few things when we bought the car but I don't think she has a way to fix the battery.
"D!" I call for her and she looks up just as I step next to her. I can see her eyes light up at my presence, I'm sure it's just because I'm here to help.
"I can't get this STUPID thing to turn over." She groans and tosses a rag on to the engine.
"Let me see." I tell her and she moves from my side. "This car is only 2 years old, I don't understand why isn't having issues."
"Me either. I just-went inside for like an hour, came out and now it won't start." She explains.
"Did you leave anything on? Like a light?" I ask as I turn to face her. I think all it needs is to be jumped.
"Umm." She pauses, I watch as she racks her brain. "No, I mean I don't think so." She shrugs. Based on her reaction I think she may have left something on, or at least their a chance that she did. But she's afraid to tell me and I'm not going to pry it out of her. So instead I just set my car up to give hers a jump.
It only takes about 3 goes to get it to start up and when it does she jumps up super happily. I snort a little at her child like reaction and shit my car door.
"Thank you B!" She exclaims as she approaches me.
"It's what I do." I joke, giving a slight shrug.
"Seriously, you're my hero. I don't know what I would do without you." She says in a serious tone. Little does she know, I wouldn't know what to do without her either. She may not be able to jump start my car but she does more for me than anyone I know.
"I love you." I tell her and she smiles really big.
"I love you too B." She reaches up and kisses me on the lips. "Shouldn't you get back to school?" She asks when she's back on her feet. I look down at my watch and realize it's already 2:50. If I make it back in time I can still teach for almost 30 minutes
"Yeah, I better go." I sigh. She falters a little and sighs too.
"Okay, well I'll see at home tonight." She says sweetly and then we share one more kiss before I hop in my car and head back.
Such a distant memory, yet so clear. I can't believe that was 12 years ago. When I look at the clock I realize it's already 8 pm and I get up at 5. I look down at my stack of ungraded papers and figure I won't finish these tonight but I still have 4 more days of fall break so I'll finish them later. Just when I'm about to get up, there's a soft knock on the door and I tell whomever to come in. It's Delilah.
"Hey, so the kids and I are going to head the market to get some last minute items for tomorrow- I was going to go by myself but once I said I was leaving they insisted that they go." She explains and smiles at the end. I adore her smile. "Do you want to come?"
I know I'll say yes before I even answer because I know I made a pact with myself after what happened with that Blake guy that I wouldn't allow her out anywhere by herself because I'm too afraid that shit will happen again.
"Yes. Let's go," I stand up and follow her downstairs.
