Tonight we're celebrating something big, Delilah won an award so we called all of our closest friends to dinner. We had our babysitter watch the kids and we got dressed in our fanciest outfits, which as parents is so very had to do.
Delilah comes down the stairs looking ravishing, in the dress she wore when we got engaged. She looks just as amazing as she did then.
"D." I gasp, clutching my chest, almost losing my breath. "This dress. You." I say gesturing to her and placing a kiss on her cheek.
"You don't look so bad yourself dad." She jokes.
"Mommy!" Violet calls to us and we direct our attention to our daughter as she comes in the living room, our babysitter Kayla following. "You look so pretty!" She beams.
"So do you Vi." Delilah kneels down to be closer to Violet, brushes Violet hair back with her and kisses her cheek.
"Well be back hopefully around 10." I tell Kayla and she looks from their interaction to me while nodding. Delilah stands up and closes the gap between us and we head outside. I watch Delilah walk to the car and I know I need to get a picture of her.
"D!" I call and she turns to me, her blue eyes shining, the sunset behind her makes for a great picture. I pull my phone and tell her to smile, she obliges. Yeah, that's screen saver material.
"I love you." She sighs as she gets in the passenger seat.
"I love you too." I tell her and we make our way to the restaurant.
When we get there, Spencer and Linda are already waiting along with Delilah's mom.
"Delilah!" Linda calls as we approach the table. "You look gorgeous."
"So do you Lin." Delilah looks over Linda's outfit with gleam.
"Hey Spenc." I nod to him and we share a small hug. Spencer and Linda spent a year in Rome together last year and I haven't seen them in almost that long. They just got back last month. They went for their honeymoon.
"Honey you're glowing." Veronica tells her daughter and I watch the small interaction. They share a hug and then we all sit down.
"Let's talk about the elephant." Spencer nods towards Delilah. We all look confused until he mentions that Delilah is blonde. I've gotten so use to it that I forgot.
"It looks amazing. Obviously." A voice interrupts us and it's Dallon. We all look to the lanky man and cheer for him.
"Way to make an entrance." I laugh and stand to hug him.
"Where's the wife?" Spencer asks.
"We couldn't find a sitter but she sends congratulations." Dallon explains before sitting.
By 7 we're all at the restaurant enjoying dinner, Delilah has had multiple interactions with fans and I love watching it.
"I'd like to make a toast." Julie stands and we all direct our attention to the woman who is part of making this all happen. "To Delilah, without her vision, without her book, we wouldn't be sitting here celebrating the fact that she won an award and the fact that were nominated for a people's choice." She goes on. "I guess I just want to say, thank you Delilah, for giving me a job-it's the best one I've had in a while."
"Well, while we're on that note." She pauses, looking at everyone. "I've finished writing my second book." And everyone gasps, including me because I of course wasn't apart of that either. I never am.
"Really! What is it?" Linda asks and I'm on the edge of my seat, wondering what she could possibly have to write.
"Well, it's called: Truthfully Me. It's an autobiography. About everything I've been through since my father passed away. You know, marrying my best friend and becoming an author. Having my children, my cancer scare a few years ago and everything in between. It's also about how I learned to cope with my situation and almost a self help in the way it tells the reader how to handle being in any abusive relationship." She explains and I'm relieved.
"We didn't want to say anything until she finished it but it's going into editing soon and then we'll be announcing it." Julie adds and I nod. The rest of us clap.
"Are we all announcing things?" Ashely asks and Delilah asks for her to tell us what she has to say. "I'm getting married again!" She says with excitement and shows her ring to us and Delilah shoots up. That makes sense considering she introduced us to a guy named Andy 2 years ago. She said he's the best thing that's ever happened to her since Rose and because Ryan disappeared when the band broke up, Andy is pretty much a father to Rose. I think the band breaking fucked with Ryan too much because he was really into it for the year he was in it. But we couldn't keep it going with the lead singer always on drugs and shit. So we slowed to a stop. Everyone saw it coming. Ryan just took it the worst.
"Delilah, do I even have to ask if you'll be my maid of honor?" Ashley asks.
"Uh duh, I'll be your maid of honor." Delilah claps.
"So I guess that just leaves us." Spencer chimes in and now I'm over this, there's too many announcements. "Since the band broke up, I've been looking for something to do with myself. And while in Rome, Linda and I decided that maybe it was time to add another addition to our family-so..." and I get where this going. Finally. "We adopted a dog." Oh. We'll never-mind.
"Just kidding! We're adopting a baby." Linda laughs and we all chuckle at their little joke.
"Congratulations!" Delilah beams. And we all go into talking about what it's like to have a kid.
By the end of the night, Delilah is 5 whiskey sours deep and ready for bed. Poor girl hasn't had a night out like this in so long. With work and the kids, she needed tonight.
I can't tell if it's the amount of announcements at dinner or the 2 beers I had but I'm kind of dizzy. I need to get home and go to bed.
