Regina's POV
"Thank you again."
"No problem."
"You're late for work for me. Thank you so much Emma."
"Anything for you. You know that." I nod and I lean in and kiss her cheek. I watch her drive off and then I go inside with Henry. He's tired so I lay him down. I always bring his baby bag with pull ups, clothes a jacket and two blankets. His blankie too. I lay him down on two chairs pushed together. I cover him and kiss his head.
"I saw Emma drop you off. She couldn't stay?"
"She wanted to be she was already late for work. She didn't want Henry and I walking since it's getting colder. She drove and didn't tell me she was late."
"You gave her a kiss."
"It was just the cheek Ruby." She smiles at me.
"A cheek kiss is still a kiss."
"You're letting her in?"
"Yes and I'm so happy. I really am. I'm so scared this is only a thing and it will go away and she'll leave or something but I don't want to believe that. We talked all night Ruby. Until two a.m. I mean it's just easy and nice with her. It's perfect."
"See this is what happens when you let yourself be happy."
"I mean I'm happy. I'm tired of course and a bit drained but I'm happy. It's so nice we don't have to be all over each other or making out or having sex or anything romantic in that way. But it's still everything. We don't need that. Rose pedals and fancy music and all that. It's everything. It's amazing feeling this happy."
"I'm so happy for you Reg." I smile and she hugs me.
"Any dates yet?"
"Yes and she said Henry will have to supervise. I'm going to cook tomorrow and we will watch movies together and maybe once Henry does to bed we will talk some more."
"Kiss?"
"I don't know."
"Is she okay with that?"
"She says she is. She likes holding hands and putting her arm around me. I kiss her cheek but I just am not ready to kiss her. I mean... I'm scared. I've never kissed a woman. She's 24 Ruby. I'm only 19 and well... I'm very inexperienced. I have never even french kissed someone. It's so nerve-racking. But I know she understands and she shows me she tell me she totally understands. She asks before touching me if it's okay and it's sweet and I like that about her. Plus it's cute every time she asks me if we can hold hands. I like it."
"Adorable. So cute."
"I'm happy for you child, but go do some work!" I smile and get straight to work.
I put on my coat ready to carry Henry home. I walk out Granny's. Oh it's cold. When a car pulls up.
"I'm so sorry I'm late. Get in you're not walking." I smile and put him in the back seat. I buckle him and then I get inside.
"Can I hold your hand?" I nod and she holds my hand. I smile stupidly.
"How was work?" She asks.
"Busy. Tiring. Same old same old. How was work for you?"
"Boring. Just did some paperwork and arrested some guy for getting into a public fight."
"Wow. You've had an eventful day." I smile and she smiles too. We get to my apartments and Emma carries him upstairs.
"I'll wait on the steps." She says handing him over. I put Henry to bed and then I sit outside with her. I rest my head on the taller woman's strong shoulder and she wraps her arm around my slim waist.
"This is nice."
"Yeah. Really nice." I say my eyes closing.
"Are you excited for our date?" She asks and I nod.
"I mean of course. Henry is going to be so happy when I tell him you're coming over. He loves you."
"He's the best."
"Yeah. He is."
"What are you cooking?"
"Is a surprise but do you have any allergies I need to know of."
"Nope. And I mostly like everything and I will try anything. I just love food."
"You and Henry are made for each other."
"I know right. We are so alike."
"It's weird but I'm glad someone cares about him like you so."
"He's amazing."
"Most people run from women with children. It's hard to talk to kids."
"Is it? For Henry it's like he's a little grown man." Emma says.
"I know but the other day Henry asked me why the sky is blue. So I said I don't know it's always been that color. He said why. I said I'm not sure and he just kept asking why. And I was annoyed a bit but if he did that with say you; you wouldn't mind but someone else would've stopped talking at the first why."
"He's my best friend."
"Oh perfect."
"So Christmas is coming up in three weeks." Emma says. I sigh. I do need more time at work.
"Yeah. It's coming so quickly."
"What are you getting Henry?" She asks.
"He's really into legos and cars. But not toy cars like the collectibles. The old cars and it's cute. He has them all on a shelf in his toy closet."
"Can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"Do you mind if I get you and Henry something for Christmas?"
"Uh... I don't really want you to buy us things."
"Please."
"Like what?"
"Maybe I'll go lego shopping with you and then we can go get him stuff kids never like. Like socks and superhero boxers and shirts and other stuff. Some shoes too."
"I don't want you spending money on us. I mean you already drive us everyday to and from work and you won't let me pay for gas."
"Because I don't want you to. I've never had anyone I could spoil on Christmas now I have Henry. And you. I want to. Please let me. I promise not to go overboard. Ten gifts each."
"Ten?! Emma no."
"Five for you but ten for the kid."
"I don't know. I really don't want to be a burden."
"Not to sound like an ass but I make good money and I always save. Please let me spoil you properly."
"Fine."
"Good."
"Can I get you something?"
"I like boxers and socks. I don't play with toys too much anymore but I do have some action figures."
"Good to know."
"What do you like?" She asks.
"Ruby and Granny always take Henry out and get me little stuff. All my
favorite chocolates or fuzzy socks because I love them. Perfume. Sometimes I get tons of kisses on Christmas from Henry. But what's really special to me and his Christmas card. He makes one every year. And he's doing for only being here for two years but what kid remembers to give a card? I'm not big on gifts. Little things.""Okay. I'm taking notes in my head." I smile.
