Chapter 2

It had been nearly two months since I began working at Grammy's diner. In that time had I become really close to Celia and Carlina. I wouldn't have said that I got over my rape but I would say that I was learning to cope with it. Sometimes I woke up crying and often times I coudln't sleep but as for the breaking down and crying, I had somewhat learned to control it; given the situation of course. I still hadn't spoken to my parents. What was I going to say? I had already told them about my rape and now any conversation I had with them would no doubt be turned into an interview. I knew it was probably hurting Mama but it was the only way I saw that would help me get over what happened. By now people had to begun to treat me like a normal human being so whenever I served I would get tips and I actually held decent conversations with some of the customers. My luck was slowly turning around. I was also gaining experience on how to run my own diner and true to their word, well so far anyway, Leon hadn't come back to visit which gave me the peace of mind I needed to recover.

"Kaitlyn I need a hand around here." Celia shouted from the kitchen.

"Gimme a minute." I said as I gave one of our regular customers his usually.

I walked into the kitchen and saw her trying to balance five plates of food. I took the two least stable and after putting them down I took a third plate.

"Thank you now hand me the sauce from the top cupboard over there. "

I reached into the overhanging cupboard, though I hand to get on my toes, to get the sauce.

"Kaitlyn I told you we need to start jogging. Look you are already getting a paunch from all the Italian food you are eating." Carlina said with some degree of astonishment as she entered the kitchen to put down a few empty plates.

"I am not." I protested.

She walked over to me and felt my stomach. "Yes you are. It's either that or you have rock lodged in your stomach."

"What?" I asked, now placing my own hand on my stomach. It did feel different . . .some how.

"Let me feel." Celia suggested as she walked over to us. She placed her hand next to ours then pressed down slightly. "That is definitely not food."

"Please don't joke like that." I warned, "It's probably just some undigested food or something."

"Or . . ." Celia began.

"I'm going to be an aunt!" Carlina practically shouted.

"Shh, shh, no you are not going to be an aunt because there is no way that I could be pregnant so there."  I realyl couldn't have been. That woudl have been beyond awful--I had no words that would accurately describe how that would be. My life was only now getting back into the right order and a baby, especially Leon's, would only have sent me spiralling all over again. I honestly don't know what I would have done if I was really having his baby so I chose not to think about it but to instead deny it. What proof did she have to tell me otherwise?

"Really? When was the last time you had a period?" Carlina asked with a challenging smirk.

At that moment I was sure that I had turned pale. I hadn't seen my period since I left Scotland but I just figured that with all the stress I was just missing them. Oh my gosh, why hadn't I seen this sooner? I mean yeah it could simply have been a coincidence but if it was it was a pretty big one. I didn't even have a comeback for her statement, I think my brain had shut down.

"Tell you what; we will go to the hospital after closing hour, is that okay?" Celia asked.

"Yes and until we get the results none of us is going to mention this to Grammy, okay?" I said turning deliberately to look at Carlina.
