Chapter 8
It had been nearly a year since I had last seen Leon though Carlina told me that he would show up at the diner ever now and then, with a new girl each time. When I asked her what happened to the first one I had met I could hear the cynicism in her voice. "He finally kicked bitch to curb." I had laughed when I heard that. Atleast I wasn't the only one he threw away after he got bored.
As I had hoped Gianni had eventually forgottten Leon though sometimes he would wake up crying for his papa but now he didn't remember who he was. He had begun walking at around one year six months so he was fully comfortable with the whole one foot then the next and repeat. Infact he was a natural now.
I continued sending pictures of Gianni to my parents and Grammy to appease them and he seemed to enjoy taking them especially on his second birthday.
Shire ran into the bedroom and laid beside the bed. Gianni ran in.
"Sweetheart what have I said about running in the house?"
"No running in house." He said with a little smile that completely melted me. I grabbed him and hugged him.
"That's right now why are you chasing Shire?"
"It's bath time." He replied with a nodd of his head and an innocent smile.
"You know you're right. " I said holding him tighter. "It's time for all little boys to have a bath and get to bed."
"No." He giggled as I picked him up. "No bath mama." I didn't know what the joke was but he was laughing out hell. Shire remained in the room, he hated the idea of any form of bath; be it his or Gianni's.
After his bath I sat with him in his room with him in my lap while he babbled on.
"Young man it's time for bed, go to sleep." I finally said.
"No." he said as he burried his face in my stomach.
"No? What do you mean no?" I asked as I began to tickle him.
"No." He laughed and tried to break free. "Not tired mama."
"Well I am so it's time for anyone with thick curly hair and nice blue eyes to go to sleep."
"Me?" He asked pointing to himself with both hands while putting on a bright smile.
"Yes you." I said into his cheek before tucking him in. "Come Shire, if you stay he'll never sleep." Shire followed me out of the room.
"Night mama." Gianni shouted from his room.
"Goodnight sweetheart." I shouted back.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
"And I love Grammy and- and Shire and the -the diner-"
"Go to sleep Gianni." He tried the same stunt almost everynight. He would talk and hope the conversation was prolonged. I usually cut him off after the first few sentences.
That night for some strange reason I tossed and turned in my bed. I couldn't sleep at all. I got up, walked around, watched some t.v but nothing worked. I drank warm milk then laid down to some music but that just woke me up even more. Why couldn't I sleep? What made things worse was that I couldn't get Leon out of my head. Earlier in the day Gianni asked me if he had a papa and I froze. I wanted to say no and make things easier but then I realized that things would never be easier so I told him that he did. He became all hyper , jumping all over and shouting 'Yay!!! I have a papa just like mama! Yay!'. It hurt to watch. Now all I could think about was Leon and how he left me, left us. Even a year later I couldn't figure out his reason which made it hurt all the more. In the end I got no sleep.
