Chapter 6
Within the next day Gianni was back to his old self. babbling on to himself or anyone who would listen and following Shire everywhere. Mama spent more of her time away from home and Papa spent most of his time bonding with his grandson and Leon. Everyone seemed so happy, even Leon, so why couldn't mama be as happy? I tried talking to her but she was just dead set against Leon for whatever reason. After awhile I became resigned to the fact that she would never accept him. Then again she didn't have to, he would be gone in five days.
At around ten papa left us to find mama.
"Is there a park near here?" Leon asked as he placed a plate in the dishwasher.
"Yeah it's just up the road."
"Then let us go visit." He suggested. I stared at him and saw that he was serious.
"Um sure, let me just get Gianni into some proper clothes. He was running around in his shirt and a diaper while clinging to Shire's coat. I grabbed him as he ran by. "Time to get dressed sweetheart." I said as I took him upstairs.
In ten minutes we were both dressed and ready to leave with Leon. He walked down the stairs and took my breath away. How was it possible that even in casual clothes he looked so gorgeous? We went to the park that was in walking distance. There were other little children running around and playing on the swings and slides. Leon picked a nice spot under a tree for us to sit. We sat and Gianni started playing with Shire.
"What do you plan to do with your future kaitlyn?" he asked as he gazed out at the kids at play. That question caught me off guard. I hadn't exactly thought past the whole owning a diner thing. What had I planned for my life.
"I don't know . . . " I said reflectively. "What about you?"
He sighed. "For now I just plant to continue helping my family. I do what I do because is only way I see that will help them."
"But there are other options too." I pointed out.
Another sighed escaped his lip as he combed his hand through his hair. "Is not that simple ." He told me, "Once you are in Mafia only way out is death and though that does not bother me I think of my sisters and my grandparents. They need me alive. Especially Carlina."
The argument died as we sat watching Gianni play with Shire. Poor dog how would he take it after we were gone? I thought of taking him with me but mama would probably be against it and besides I didn't think they allowed dogs into their airport or on their planes.
Minutes later a few little girls ran over to us.
"That there's a cute baby." One little girl said as the rest crowded around Gianni.
"Can we play with him?" Another asked as she gazed at him.
"Um. . . Sure." I said with a little uncertainty. They were still babies themselves and it didn't seem wise to let them. Still Gianni did look as if he adored the attention. The one with red hair picked him up and was struggling as they walked away. "Wait sweetheart." I called after her. Apparently Leon knew exactly what I was going to say because as she turned to listen to me with such innocently curious look Leon answered for me.
"Just don't let him go down slide alone." Leon said with a smile. I looked at him but he seemed to have tuned me out.
"Okay." The little girl said with a smile as she and her little friends quickly walked over to the sand pit.
"Leon-" He cut me off with a raise of his hand but then he turned to me and smiled.
"You must remember that he is little boy and he need play. Especially if is with cute little girls who think he is adorable at such young age." I stared at him in disbelief. Did he expect that Gianni would turn out to be some kind of player or something? "Come, let us get ice cream to enjoy day."
