Amanda

It's the last period of the day and I don't want to lie to myself - I need  to get out of here.

Ms. du Preez comes walking in 5 minutes later, a bounce to her step, and a smile on her face. She's a woman on a mission. Placing the stack of papers on the table, she turns to us, I notice the look in her eyes,  one that means she's up to something. "Uh oh," I whisper.

"Afternoon class, you all look dapper today." Lie. We look tired. "You guys probably already know what this is." She says, a hand on the stack of papers.

"You guys will be working on an assignment based on human rights. You guys get to work in a group of 3 and you guys will be happy to hear that the assignment is due when the schools reopen so you guys have plenty of time. I'd have given you guys the assignment the following week, but you guys will probably just stay home since the schools are closing." True. How depressing though, these holidays have now turned into let's do extra schooling. Yay.

Both Judith and Natalie pull their desks closer to mine, clearly not happy about receiving an assignment for holidays. "Did I ever tell you guys that I don't really like her?"

"We all don't at the moment."

We talk about the project, not bothering to take out the textbook for ideas. The bell rings and we get up, all of rushing to get off the premises.

"It's a good thing that today is a Friday,  we can come over later and start working on the project, right? If it's okay with your parents." Natalie asks, opening the door.

What could happen? It's just a project, right? Besides the fact that Mickey will be around us, eavesdropping on us, trying to hear something that might incriminate me. "Yeah, you guys can come over."

"Great. 6 pm is okay, right?

"Yeah, sure. It's great." Can't wait.

"Great, we'll let our parents know." By then they were already ahead from me, running down the corridor. Probably to catch up to their parents.

Great, now I have to make Mikey disappear.

6 PM on the dot both girls knock on the door as I throw chicken with vegetables in the oven. Before I can hurry to the door I hear it open. "Hey girls, my name is Mikey." He says smoothly. Is he trying to hit on my friends?

"Hey Mikey, my name is Judith and this one here is Natalie, where's your sister?"

The door shuts, "She's in the kitchen, but you ladies can come up with me to my room as you wait for her." I could tell he was moving his eyebrows suggestively.

"Maybe when we done with the project we will come and find you. How's that?"

"I'll be waiting, ladies." Eew.

Somehow the girls find the kitchen without any help, both bumping their hips with mine as I pour myself a glass of water. I jump, the water soaking my shirt in the process.

"Look, we made you wet."

I fake a laugh.

"Anyway is that your brother?" I give them a questioning look.

"Because that's definitely not the person you constantly talking about."

"Or the devil as you call him." Judith says.

"You guys like my brother?" You've got to be kidding me. He's got them wrapped around his short pinkie. That devil!

"I mean his cute, funny and I like him."
