Winter Dance - John
It was that time of year again. The school winter dance was fast approaching and for the 5th year running, I had nobody to go with. My school is very small so you would've thought I had at least one person. I'm a sociable person too, I just don't let many people into my life because I have trust issues. I'll talk to anyone - just not about myself. This gave me the description of a mysterious girl. It was my last year of school too, so I felt like I had to go to the dance. I didn't last year as I had nobody and I didn't see any point in going alone.
I had a dress picked out. It was burgundy and lace. It surprisingly fit me very well. I even had shoes ready for the event - they were a simple black pair but still, I was prepared. The only thing I didn't have was somebody to go with.
All in all I was a pretty lonely person. I didn't see my parents often - they worked long hours to pay for my older brother's education. I would've had him if he wasn't at university studying to be a doctor. I always felt like a disappointment to my family as I didn't inherit the academic genes.
So here I am. Sat at home watching TV with a bag of crisps in hand. Just a usual Monday night. My mood was a bit on edge. The dance was this Friday! I began to debate whether it was actually worth going when I heard a knock on my front door. Naturally, I got up to open it.
"Hi" I greeted the boy at my doorstep
"Hey" he scratched the back of his head timidly
"What brings you here John?" I leant my shoulder against the doorframe
Me and John have been friends for a while now. We always talk to each other and he is the person I have opened up to most. He is in a similar situation to me with his family. Although, he only lives with his mother but she works very late shifts into the night. We are both kind of lonely in that sense so we have found a comfort with each other.
"May I come inside? It's cold" John asked politely
I nodded my head before leading him into the dining room. We sat down in chairs next to each other.
"So, what's up?" I questioned
"I just got a bit lonely at home. Christmas is the worst for me. Everyone else is celebrating with their families and I'm sat all on my own with the TV." He spoke all too familiarly
"I know. It's not fair" I frowned, "cheer up though. The winter dance is on Friday and I know how much you love a disco" I giggled lightly
I was surprised to see his face look even grumpier, "I would be looking forward to it if I had somebody to go with"
"I'm sure you will John. You're a nice chap" I smiled
"Thank you" I saw the tops of his cheeks turn a rosy pink
"I'm getting pretty lonely too. Last year I had my brother with me but he's at Uni and spending the Christmas there" I explained
"That sucks" he sighed
"Yeah" I tapped my nails on the dining table
"Well I should be going now. Sorry for just dropping in" John stood up
"It's no problem. I like your company" I smiled sweetly
I followed John back to my front door. He opened it and stood in the doorway for a second. He was hesitating about something.
"Look, I can't really find the proper words but let me show you how much you mean to me. Will you go to the dance with me?" John said all in one breath
"John, I-"
"I'm such an idiot! Why would somebody like you want to go to the dance with me? I'll be off" John rambled in one big panic
"No John!" I grabbed his arm and spun him round so he was facing me again, "I don't have the words either. So let me show you"
I pulled the taller boy down by the clothes on his chest so I could reach his lips. I gave him a soft kiss and pulled away, smiling.
"Is that a yes?" John asked before shivering slightly
"Yes, I'll go to the dance with you John" I grazed my thumb over his frost bitten cheek
Friday night came and I dressed up nicely. John's face when he first saw me was amazing. His jaw dropped to the floor and his eyes lit up.
"Y-you look...stunning" he said as his cheeks flushed pink
"You're looking dashing as always" I said as I looked him up and down in his neat tuxedo
"May I take you to the dance?" John asked
"It would be a pleasure" I said, barely above a whisper
When we arrived at the winter dance we were quick to get straight on to the dance floor. It was so nice to have a whole evening with John as we danced through the night. Nobody bothered us as we danced close together. It was perfect. His hands were securely on my waist and my arms were gently hanging around his neck. We swayed to the beat of the last song.
"I've wanted to dance with you for a while now" John admitted
"Really?" I questioned rhetorically with furrowed brows
"I've had an amazing night. Can I walk you home?" John asked
"That would be lovely" I smiled
When we made our way home the ground had already turned to frost. John gracefully gave me his jacket which I felt bad for as he shivered along side me. We then conjured a plan so we were both sharing the jacket. This also gave me the opportunity to cuddle up close to John as we walked home.
