Infinity

They told me the sky was the limit

But how could their words have been true?

          It took only force

          And a well-chosen course

To sear through that fragile illusion of blue.

I quit the blue marble where I'd been marooned

Plunged into a vast pitch-black sea

          Headlong in my flight

          No horizon in sight

Forsaking the flagging grasp of gravity

I sailed past the moon like a streak through the void

Passed Mars in a brilliant flash

          Sped on past the spheres

          As I reckoned light-years

Blazed out of the Milky Way in a mad dash

I counted a million billion stars

     Then added a trillion more

          Defied time and space

But could still reach a place

I knew I had never encountered before

And onward I race with no thought of the past

     No shift in my trajectory

          When my journey ends

          More or less all depends

     On when I reach infinity.
