I long for distant days of old
Where sunlight flowed like molten gold
O'er grassy glades and treetops bold
And heights on the horizon
Where stars burned bright and paths wound long
Away from hearths ringing with song
Through forests deep and rivers strong
To jagged mountains rising
Where great bells pealed the passing hours
Spent musing in secluded bowers
On parchment scrolls from ivory towers
In citadels of splendour
Where broadswords blazed with righteous ire
The baleful glow of dragonfire
And streaming pennants would inspire
The valiant defender.
For nights are close and days are plain
And each hour hums a dull refrain
Of minds bemused by tasks mundane
And restless wishes roaming
And when the rose-gold twilight falls
E'er westward under inky palls
Forgotten quests sound plangent calls
From far beyond the gloaming...
