I slept fitfully. I was anxious, and I felt like my body had too much energy to simply lay down. I twisted and turned in bed. I heard soft knock on the door and Mia popped her head inside.
"You're up?" she asked.
"Yeah, come in" I said.
"What's wrong?" she asks, as she makes her way towards the bed.
"I can't sleep" I said. I just wanted to close my eyes and escape reality for a few hours.
"I could hear you twisting and turning all the way over in my room" she says. She lays down beside me and we face each other, as we cover ourselves with the duvet cover.
"Did something happen?" she asked again.
"I don't think your older brother likes me" I said. I didn't know why I chose to trust her and I guess I just missed having a sister I could confide in.
"Older brother? Who?" she asked, surprised.
"I don't want to say his name" I reply back.
A puzzled look crossed her face. She studied me for a while and I could tell she was trying to put things together.
"Do you mean Gabriel?" she asked, softly.
I reluctantly nodded.
"What gave you that impression?" she asked.
"He's not thrilled that I spend time here..." I say, and I can't hide just how disappointed my tone was.
Her eyes widened.
"Did he say that?" she asked and when I nodded a murderous look crossed her face.
"He'll be hearing from me" she says, her voice dropping with venom.
"No please. I'm just venting to you as a friend. I don't want to rile things up between you and your brother" I said.
"Look Sage, don't take what he said to heart. The fact that you even got an emotion out of him... is something most of us almost never experience. You saw how he is. He's extremely protective of us, but he doesn't share anything with us. I love my brother, he's just a difficult person to deal with sometimes" she said, her voice sad.
"I just don't understand why I even spurred this emotion from him" I tell her, still confused and hurt.
"Let's forget about my hot-headed brother. There was something I wanted to talk to you about" she said, her voice flipped from annoyance to excitement.
"Sure, what's up?" I ask her.
She inches closer to me and she stares at me, wide-eyed and her smile as broad as daylight.
"Why don't you join our coven?" she asks. Her question took me off guard. I gasped.
"What?" I ask, feeling uneasy as her eyes roamed my face.
"I'm serious Sage. We've grown so close in such little time. We never expected that we will accept another vampire among us. You know how tight Mitchel runs things. But... we all feel like you're the last missing piece that ties this family together" she said, her voice so earnest that I felt my heart tighten.
"I don't know Mia... I've grown accustomed to being on my own" I tell her, so unsure.
"Do you love us?" she asks.
"Of course, I do. You know that, right?" I tell her.
She outstretches her palms and rubs it on my cheek.
"Think about it. We love you, and we want you" her voice was so sure, it almost made me agree.
"What about Mitchel?" I asked. Did their leader know that they wanted me part of his coven?
"Mitchel knows. We kind of talked about this, before I came up to you. I wouldn't dream proposing this before knowing that everyone was on board" she says.
"What about... him? Did he agree?" I ask her, and she sighs.
"He didn't voice his opinion. It doesn't matter, the majority voted in your behalf" she demands.
"I'll think about it Mia" I tell her.
"Please consider it Sage. You'll be happy here. You'll have a family that will love you and protect you" she says, and her words fills me with such calmness that I felt sleep drape over me.
"Let's sleep. We'll talk more about this later" I tell her.
She nods. We fall asleep together, holding hands. I felt so loved in that moment. She's the sister I've always needed.
This is how i imagine gabriel looks at sage :) minus the wet hair.
