I spent the next two days roaming the small town. Phoebe gave me directions to the shops that I needed, so that I can buy everything before school starts. I bought some clothes. It was colder than I predicted. I also bought some stationary. I liked shopping in this small town. It had everything I wanted, and I liked that it lacked the luxury boutiques. I liked how simple everything was.
The townspeople were nice. Everybody knew about me by now. It was tight knit community and I wished I could belong to it. It felt nice to be welcomed, although they knew little about me. They pitied that a young girl had to live alone. I told them I was 17. It was always smart to start to with a young age, it helped to buy more time. Maybe after I graduated, I can stay on for a few years? Maybe until I needed to show signs of aging?
I sighed. It's best not to make hasty plans. Maybe once I left Lightport I can go back to Xavier, who has been nagging me to visit him. He was residing in Paris now.
"I bet it gets lonely sometimes" the saleswoman told me, slicing though my thoughts.
I shrugged, "not really... after a while you just get used it" I told her. It's true. I had grown accustomed to solitude.
Once I exited her shop, after I bought a new pair of jeans and sneakers. I suddenly craved a cup of coffee. It was cold today and since I didn't indulge in blood anymore, the cup of coffee will have to do. It almost made up for how good a warm cup of blood would be.
I shook my head. Thinking about blood wasn't wise.
There was a small diner around the corner. I noticed a lot of people, who were supposedly my age, go in there. The place had booths and I liked how vibrant it was.
I found an empty booth and a waitress came up to me.
"Welcome to Dan's diner. What can I get you?" she asked.
"Just a cup of coffee please" I said. She wrote down my order and gave me another look over.
"You're the new kid that's living at Phoebe's, right?" she asked.
"Yeah, I'm Sage" I said, not dropping my smile.
She was in her mid-thirties. Brown hair and brown eyes. She seemed harmless. This whole town was harmless.
"Welcome to Lightport" she said with a smile and walked off to fetch my order.
I took out my phone and I realized I had a miscall from Xavier. I quickly called him back and he picked up after the third ring.
"Sage. It's been ages since I've heard from you" he said, once he picked up.
I rolled my eyes.
"We talked the day before yesterday" I reminded him.
"Oh, you know how I lose track of time... how is everything with the move?" he asked.
"It's good. I've settled in fine... it's a small town, everyone is nice, you know the drill" I told him, and smiled as the waitress brought me my coffee.
"Remind me again where you moved?" he asked.
I took a sip of my coffee and it tasted good.
"Lightport, Alaska" I said after swallowing.
"What are you drinking? I hope it's blood!" he said excitedly.
"It's coffee" my tone was flat.
"Ugh, I can't stand coffee. How do you even manage to drink it?" he asked.
"It's just a habit" I said, taking another sip.
"Wait... did you say Lightport?" he asked, his voice peaked.
