The song Broken Home blasted in my ears as I walked home from dinner with Augustus.
It was better than I'd imagined! We talked like old friends. I loved it.
Anyway, I had to be home by 5:30 to get dog stuff for Violet, the Miniature Schnauzer I had to watch for an hour and a half.
I walked for about ten minutes before coming up to my house, a little farmhouse with blue paint and white shutters.
My older brothers were playing basketball in the driveway.
The eldest who was 18, Dylan, spotted me coming and said, "Hey! Reese, where were you for dinner?"
The second eldest who was 17, Clark, said, "Yea, we missed you."
He ruffled my hair, and I ducked away from him, saying, "Sure, you did. I was at Connor Sister's with a friend."
The youngest eldest who was 16, Lee, said, "Ooh, who? Was it a boy?"
I groaned. I should have known. "Yes, it was Augustus Winters."
Dylan dropped his basketball, and feigned shock. "The guy you've like for a year and a half?"
"Oh, guys, you sound like Caroline! Stop it, we're just friends. Don't go full on protective-brother on me."
"Too late, sis," Lee said, grinning. "He cute?"
"Oh, just because you don't have a boyfriend doesn't mean you can steal my crushes!"
Lee was omnisexual, by the way. He was mainly into guys, but he liked to keep his options open.
"Look, I'm going to get some dog stuff I might need for tonight, I'm watching Violet for the Anderson's."
"Ha, have fun. That dog's a handful," Clark said, laughing.
I sighed, and walked inside. The three went back to playing basketball.
"Hey, sweetie! How was dinner with Augustus?" my mom asked, smiling.
"Actually, it was great. We're meeting at the park tomorrow around 12:00."
"OK, great. You should hurry and get the dog supplies, the Anderson's are leaving soon."
"Got it."
I dashed through the kitchen, and up the stairs to my room. I found the dog leash, dog treats, and a Better Home and Gardens magazine for me.
My phone rang, and I saw it was Caroline.
"Hey, Caroline. Make it fast, I've got to go soon."
"Just wanted to ask how it went with him. So? I want details!"
"Nothing really special, we talked about Shakespeare and we ate."
"But?"
"We're hanging out tomorrow at the park!"
"Ah! That's great!"
"Listen, I've got to go now. I'll FaceTime with you through Messenger tomorrow if I have the time."
"Alright, bye!"
"Bye."
I laughed, hanging up. Caroline was that cliche girl who was into drama and details of her friends dates.
I shouted to my mom, "I'm leaving through the window!"
"'Kay, be safe."
I opened my side window, and climbed onto the roof. I loved leaving the house this way, made me feel like I was about to save the world or something.
