The room was warm like sunlight and winter fires and was filled with excited chatter. Even the aura of the preschool seemed to lift my omega side as I took in the calm and enthusiasm of the small children. From my view close to the door where I came in, I scanned over the play area, over the kids as they talked, the little girls who were playing house with the dolls and to the craft table where a small group of boys and girls were crowded.
A smile crossed my face and my heart squeezed. This was the reason.
A little girl talked excitedly to the rest of the kids as she drew on paper, her light brown hair held back by the worn-down crayon she had slipped behind her ear. I could see light and happiness sparkling in her rose-red eyes as she drew in the other children with her enthusiasm.
I could help but laugh softly. She's so popular. At least that was something she didn't take after me in.
In the corner of my eye I saw the teacher spot me at the door and she called out to the little girl. She looked up and her gaze went straight to me.
She dropped her pencils immediately and came running like a little tornado towards me.
"Daddy!"
I caught her in my open arms and lifted her up to level my gaze and grinned widely at her. "Hey my little girl, what have you been up to today?"
Her smile was nearly as wide as her eyes as she pulled out a piece of paper and proudly showed it off in front of her. "I drew us! You see it?"
Akane pointed roughly at a human shaped scribble with spikey yellow hair. "That's you. And that's me."
Her finger moved to a smaller person with brown hair. "And we're both really happy 'cause we're smiling!"
I smiled and laughed. "That's really good, Akane." I put her back down on the ground gently. "I think it might have to go up on the fridge."
"Yep!" She reached up and grabbed my hand, which almost killed my heart with cuteness until she got distracted. "Oh look it's Sensei."
I looked up and followed her gaze to see a young female omega making her way towards us. She greeted me with a small bow.
"Hello, you must be this little one's father." She said cheerily. "I'm a new teacher."
"Oh," I bowed back. "I wondered why I hadn't seen you before."
"Well, I'm glad I finally able to meet you Bakugou-san. Your daughter is quite the talker when it comes to her dad." She looked at Akane for a moment who gave her a grin.
"Well, that's cause he's amazing!"
I rubbed the back of my neck and glanced at my little girl. "I don't know about that."
The omega woman waved my comment away. "Don't talk yourself down when your daughter is telling the truth."
As I didn't answer she ventured a question. "You're . . . an omega aren't you?" she asked softly.
"Yeah, I am." I confirmed without shame. I could tell another omega at least.
"Your lucky to have been mated and become pregnant at such a young. You don't have to worry anymore."
Our conversation came to halt.
My stomach dropped and I felt a little sick. The words got caught in my throat. An older teacher I had met a long time ago let out an awkward cough from where she was looking after a boy with a bleeding finger.
"I . . ." I murmured and looked at the floor. "I don't have a mate."
"Oh," She seemed to realise her mistake and her eyes widened. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have-"
The young teacher broke off, no longer quite sure what to say. I tried to stop the stiff silence with a small, "It's okay, I get it all the time."
She look back up at me, grateful I had relieved her of the offence. " . . . Akane's other father then-"
"Is not around anymore." I finished softly. A lump was forming in my throat as I spoke. "He's not important in mine or Akane's lives."
I hope that small lie had sounded convincing but I don't think I could say much more without my voice wavering. I needed to leave.
"Well, it was nice meeting you." I grasped Akane's small warm hand a little tighter as I backed up to leave. "I might see you next time I come to pick her up."
We left with a small wave to the teacher and Akane waved to her friends and I retreated into the cool carpark. My weak legs forced my feet to stop and I closed my eyes, breathing the chilly night air in to calm my beating heart. A small hand tugged on my arm and I flickered my eyes open again.
"Dad," I looked down at the little girl as her voice turned small. "What's a mate?"
I crouched down beside her and ignored the aching in my heart. "Someone that loves and looks after you." I brushed her light brown hair out of her eyes, smiling gently. "But it's not important to Daddy right now, okay? You're what important to me."
She nodded slowly and she reached up, touching her small hands to me cheeks. "I could look after you." she said stubbornly. "I already love you."
I laughed and pressed my large palm against the back of her hand. "I know, baby girl. I love you too."
She finally stopped looking serious so I lifted her up in my arms and hugged her up to my chest. I felt her arms squeeze around my neck and I buried my nose in her hair.
This is all I need. This is all I should want. I rubbed her back. Just stop aching, stupid fucking heart.
A/N: Yay! I actually did a better chapter as promised! I won't update for another week though because I'm on a camp for school. Oof. If you liked my Kiribaku story so far comment and vote. Thanks for reading!
