Though night had fallen, the city street was lit with a million different lights almost like the star lit sky beyond the height of the skyscrapers around it. The air had a chill now that the sun had vanished, nipping at my exposed hands and face and my chest through my thin shirt. But it didn't concern me nor was I even aware of it as I pushed my way through the masses of people on the road. The only thought on my mind was to find my daughter.I knew now that she had been taken from my parents' front yard because I had called my mother as I came here. When I arrived, I had found out that it had all ended about an hour ago, that the villain had been arrested and my daughter had been rescued from a police officer who had been cornering off the road. After asking my name he had quickly directed me in the direction of an ambulance closer to the centre of the crowd where he had said Akane was being checked out.
What I didn't know was just what condition she was in. Was she really okay? My stomach was clenching uncomfortably inside me as I rushed towards it, my heart almost jumping out of my ribcage.
"Akane!" I called out as I reached the ambulance, shoving past the last few people until she came in view.
From where she was facing completely away from me, she turned around in an instant as the sound of my voice, her big eyes widening as she found me standing there.
"Dad!" I hardly had time to kneel down to her height as she rushed straight at me, her mouth turned into a huge smile and tears building up in her gaze. "Daddy! You're here!"
She almost knocked me to the ground and wrapped her arms tightly around my neck. She buried her head into my shoulder, wetting my shirt with her tears and she kept mumbling through shaky breaths. "You're here."
I felt my body sag with relief, all my built-up stress releasing from me as I felt her body push up against me as if she was looking for warmth. Her familiar scent calmed my heart as I felt breathing begin to waver.
"Thank god, thank god." I sighed unsteadily. I could feel my own tears fall down my face unable to hold them back anymore as I ran a hand through the back of her brown hair to hold her head to me. "You're okay. It's all okay, I'm here now."
I let what seemed like forever pass with her between my arms until she pulled back a little.
I kept my hands on her shoulders and looked her up and down studying her face and body for injury. I frowned a little as I touched a hand to a couple of bruises and scrapes on her face but she leaned into my hand and pressed it to her face to stop it moving.
"Are you hurt?" I asked her, worry forming a little ball in my stomach.
Akane smiled, rubbing her thumb across the back of my hand. "Yeah, I'm okay."
"That's good." I let out a huge sigh, wiping my sleeve across my face to dry it. "I was so worried. Did you thank the hero that saved you?"
My daughter's eyes lit up as questioned her as if she had just remembered something. "Dad! You'll never guess who it was!"
Somehow, I had already had a bad feeling when I asked her. "Who was it?"
"The one that saved me! It was Red Riot!"
Red. Fucking. Riot. I froze to the spot. "Huh?"
"Yeah, yeah! He even came to see me here and he was awesome and so cool. He did have to leave though."
The rest of what Akane was saying faded into background noise as my heart panicked in my chest like a caged bird. Shit. Shit. Shit. Why did this have to happen? Without thinking my gaze flickered around the crowds of people, searching, half-expecting the red-haired alpha to step out right in front of me.
