It was a cool fall night. The wind was cascading an armada of mahogany and orange tinted leaves onto the ground. Maritza Vespucii and her best friend, Zayne Vincete were laying on the old worn out couch of Maritza's aunts old Victorian house in Albany, New York.
(Maritza's POV)
Zayne and I were sitting on the couch, watching tv. Then my mom and dad waltzed into the room.
"Maritza, can we talk to you?" My father said.
I turned my attention to my parents. My mother was dressed in dark blue sweatpants and a baby pink t-shirt. Her hair was in a messy bun. I still wondered how I acquired my strait brown hair and green-blue eyes. My mother had wavy, blond hair and hazel eyes. My father had black hair with brown eyes. Must be some strange genetic thing. I also have a slight Italian accent. My mother is American and my father, as well. My last name is different then theirs. Their last names were Johnson.
"Yeah dad?" I said.
"Were moving."
In one motion, I slammed my glass of soda, causing the brown, sugary liquid to splater all over the table.
"Mari!" Zayne exclaimed.
I looked over he was on his feet. Looking at the floor.
"Sorry." I said.
I gazed at my parents who seemed annoyed by the soda incident.
"Why are we moving?" I asked my parents.
"Your father was hired at a better job, we need the money." My mother said.
"Where?" I said.
"Were moving to Los Angeles."
I silently gasped. I glared at them.
"California!? That's so far away!"
"Yes, I know. But we have to Mari, I'm sorry. We leave in 2 weeks." My father said.
I felt a burning anger swelling inside me.
"Zayne, see you tomorrow." I said.
I ran up the stairs, causing them to eerily creak.
I flew through my door and slammed it. I tried to calm down. I inhaled and layed on my side. I gazed at the glimmering stars out my window. This calms me down. My heartbeat began to regulate, and my temper diminished. I was almost asleep when I heard knocking on my bedroom door.
"Come in." I hesitantly said. I wanted to just be alone, but my parents wanted to check on me.
I heard the door squeak open, then light footsteps. I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Listen Maritza, I know it's gonna be hard, moving across the country, but we need to." My father said.
I sighed.
"Okay dad." I said.
"Good night Mari." My mom said.
"Night'" I replied.
They shut the door. I slowly began drifting to sleep. Then a freezing blast of ice-cold air hit me. I instantly sat up.
"Damn." I said to myself.
I could see my breath. What in the bloody hell was going on?
I turned my head towards the wall. Then I saw it. A dark figure with no face was standing in the corner of my bedroom staring at me. My eyes widened. I let out a bloodcurlding shreik.
My dad burst through the door.
"What's wrong?!" He asked worriedly.
I was breathing heavy and wide eyed, staring at the now empty corner. There was nothing, just the plain white wall. I was hoping everything would be better. I was wrong.
