Darkness. That's all that was existent.

I stood on a high building, staring into the distance. In my range of sight was a ginormous complex and a large grey building. Helicopters flew over it with giant lights scanning the area. The faint sound of an alarm was blaring from the complex. Footsteps came behind me.

"Sir. We have no contact with commander Alfons." Someone said to me.

"Be careful. They're swarming the entire city. Find him."

"Yes ma'am." He said and left.

From the complex was a bright darkness swarming. It had things flying from it. From below me, I could hear the bloodcurdling screams of innocents.

"It's begun." I said and cocked my gun.

Then I woke up.

The morning smelled like French coffee and Doritos. I slowly peeled my eyes. I was sweating. I was still a little tired. I sat up and looked at Kristin who was in a peaceful slumber. I rubbed my eyes and pulled back the covers. I got out of bed and approached Kristin. I kneele beside her and softly shook her.

"Wha-" she said sluggishly.

"Get up shithead."

She laughed.

"Fuck you." She joked.

I opened the curtain. It was dark and cold. The sky was a deep purple and the slightest hint of orange was peaking from the horizon. I'm going to miss sunrises like this and staring out this window that's become a habit now.

"Dude, where's the bathroom?" Kristin asked.

"Down the hall, first door to your right." I said.

"Thanks." She said as she walked out.

I wandered to my dresser and looked at myself. I was sweaty, paler than usual, and my hair looked like a pissed off cat just attacked my head. I just stood there, staring at my reflection. I could never see myself the same way. Before I saw myself as Maritza Vespucci, another typical American teenager. Now it's Maritza Vespucci, I don't know who I am. I'm just a lost soul.

"I'm-"

"Beautiful." Kristin broke in from behind me, making me jump a little.

"Sorry." She said.

She came next to me.

"You are very beautiful Mari." She told me. I kept staring at the mirror.

"You might want to brush your hair though. It looks like you stuck your head in a ceiling fan."

I couldn't help but laughing. She smiled and walked away. I got into my closet and pulled out light wash skinny jeans, a grey and black sweater, a dark brown coat and my trustworthy brown boots. I got dressed quickly and French braided my hair. My hair was starting to turn darker. It looked almost chocolate brown now.

I grabbed my stuff and went downstairs with Kristin.

"Morning girls." My father said. He was sitting at the table on his laptop drinking coffee.

We sat down and ate sandwiches and coffee. We finished and made our way outside after I kissed my parents goodbye. We walked to school today, I want to spend as much time as possible with Kristin until I depart. We arrived on campus and went directly to the library. There we sat at an empty table and grabbed a book.

"Here, take this with you. It's a great book."

She handed me it and I looked at it. It was called Legend by Marie Lu. On the cover was a golden seal with what looked like a capital R on a grey background.
