It was a crisp, cool night. The pale moonlight from the crescent above washed its silvery glow over everything down underneath it. A gust of strong wind ruffled the leaves on a giant forest of maple trees. They snapped off the branches and slowly fluttered to the dry, bare ground below. Only a few patches of grass was there, brittle, brown, and dead. Nothing stirred in the small patches of undergrowth, not even a wood mouse. Everything was silent.
This was the scene of Maple Forest, named because a majority of the trees in the forest was maple trees. But, this was the bad part of the usually abundant forest. It was known as the BadGrounds, where there was little prey, meaning little life.
Down on the ground, a black & gray wolf emerged from a burrow under a dark, shady maple tree with twisted branches.
He shook his pelt before trotting briskly out into the darkness. He stopped to sniff the bare ground underneath him before continuing, his one good eye on his right side looking at all of his surroundings, for his left one had a long scar over it, making him blind out of it. Everything seemed to be silent as he passed through. Not even his paws made the leaves and twigs under them snap or crackle. He finally stopped at another burrow, this one bigger than his. "Brother..." the wolf whispered silently. "Brother...I got some bad news." In a spilt heartbeat, another wolf, a large, shaggy black & red one, stepped wearily outside into the chilly night. The rusty chain that was attached to his large leather spiked collar made a soft clanging noise.
He sat in the shadow of the tall tree, while the other one sat in the moonlight. "Yes, brother. What is the news," the black & red one asked while scratching behind his ear with one of his red paws. The black & gray wolf stepped up to him and leaned in close until they were both almost breathing on each other. "Morning Star just had her cubs tonight. Two vixens and a tod. We have to make sure they don't make it into winter........alive." He stepped back to where he was. The other one nodded and stepped into the moonlight. The pale light washed onto his face, revealing his red eyes, gleaming with hatred and revenge. "We will."
