Bright warm sunlight and a calming breeze filled the afternoon air. Leaves broke off the tree branches and fluttered gently to the forest floor in scattered piles. At the bottom of the largest maple tree in the whole forest, was a large burrow.
And in front of that burrow was a beautiful maple-colored vixen laying in a nest of leaves, while a chocolate-brown male fox cleaned her. They were both watching their 3 new cubs play in a small pile of dry, crackling leaves.
The female watched them for awhile before looking at the male and asking,"I forgot their names again, Soulfire. Do you remember them?" Her voice sounded soothing and as smooth as silk. Fireheart stopped licking her back and raised his head, his brown eyes glistening in the sun. He looked at the three cubs pawing at the dry leaves.
"Hmmmmmmmm...Well, Morning Star, that one is Maple," He pointed with his snout to a girl that was almost the exact color of maple sap. "And the boy is Flame." He pointed to a boy the color of a raging forest fire that was jumping like a jackrabbit. Morning Star turned her head to find the last one, a girl. She wasn't playing with the other two. Her back was turned from the others while she was licking her paw.
"Well, um, I guess, ummmm.....", Soulfire mumbled.
There was a long silence before Morning Star said, "How about F.O.X.?"
He looked puzzled at his mate. "Fox? What kind of name is that supposed to be?" She shook her head while saying, "No, no, silly. Not that type of Fox. I mean F-O-X, Soulfire."
"Oh, well, I knew that. What does it stand for, anyway?" Her eyes fell into his and she whispered, "We will soon find out, my dear." She licked his nose and returned to watching her cubs. He straightened his ears and blushed, then continued to clean her.
