Ayush still could not believe what he had heard a few days back. He started cracking his joints out of fury as his mother's words echoed in his ears.
"Ayush... We think you should get married to Samaira... I know it's not right to talk to you about this now. But I think it will be good for both of you. Both of you need strength and only you can provide it to each other. I'm not forcing you. Take your time and think. Will it be good for you? Will it be good for your daughter Prarthana? Will it be good for Samaira and her kids? We are waiting for your next move. Religion and caste is not a boundary. So you needn't think about that. I too don't think you'll consider that reason for rejecting her.And it will be good if you go to Dubai with her. Both of you would be able to understand each other better and also come out of the pain you are going through. "His mother had said a week before. His in laws and father was right behind her, making their acceptance visible. He had retaliated fiercely yet they asked him to think we'll.
He could see Samaira standing a little away from him. She had her arms crossed and a depressed face. He knew she was going through the same turmoil as him.
Their parents had just asked him what his opinion was and he just asked them to do whatever they like. He still couldn't 't understand what made him say so. Maybe because he felt Prarthana needs a mother.
"Look. "he said loud enough for her to hear. She tilted her head and looked at him.
"I don't know where this will take us. I said a yes only for the sake of my daughter. If you don't want this loveless marriage, you can back out any instant. I won't stop you. "he continued.
"Like you, I agreed for this only for my daughter's sake and for the sake of my promise to Praniti. "she replied and walked out of his room.
'What promise? 'he wondered.
..........
Samaira entered her room and locked it. She took out the diary and held it close to her heart. She could feel her knees going weak and soon landed on the floor.
"Why did you do this to me Praniti?"she wailed.
Kevin who was in the room, heard his mother's cry and came running to her. He kneeled down beside her and wiped her tears.
"Don't cry Mumma. If you cry... I will also cry. "his voice faltered and Samaira hugged him tightly as she could.
"I won't cry baby. "she said and kissed his forehead and cheeks.
"Mamaee"the ten months old Reyan squealed and layed on his stomach.
Samaira smiled.
She hugged her babies and plopped kisses on their face.
............Ayush lay on a couch, staring at Praniti's portrait, while baby Prarthana lay sleeping on his lap.
Praniti had wanted to call her child Prarthana if it's a girl .Ayush too liked the name as it meant prayer. Her birth was indeed the granting of a hundred prayers. Her official naming ceremony was not yet conducted as her mother was no more.
Ayush wished to conduct the ritual as he didn't want his daughter to be deprived of anything. She had already lost something precious.
"See Praniti.. I'm not even able to perform a naming ceremony for her. "he whispered without moving his eyes.
"Instead.. I'm going to marry your best friend and one of my good friends....Samaira.... Do you think I'm joking? No...I'm not... Situations made me agree to this... I promise you Praniti.... She'll never be able to replace you..Your place in my heart will always be void... I will live cherishing our memories.... Love will happen only once.... Mine has already happened and I'll cling onto its bits forever.... "
He made Prarthana lay on the bed and stood before the large portrait. He then placed his head on it and slowly ran his fingers through it.
People never die.. They live on through the memories they created.
...............
