Leaving their bags at the luggage room, they left the premises. It was almost 11.00pm and the whole town seemed asleep. It was dark and silent. Very few lights were still on, in the buildings nearby. Rarely was anyone seen on the streets. It truly was an old small town.
And I'm stuck here till morning. He thought.
Though they walked side by side, their styles were quite different. While he walked with his hands folded, his anxious eyes looking at all directions for any sort of movement, she walked with her hands hidden in the front pockets of her hoodie, almost skipping with amusement. He was scared and she was excited. And then, she started whistling.
He immediately turned to her and asked, "Do you want us to get killed?"
She stopped whistling and asked, "What? No, I don't."
"Then stop attracting attention!" he said feeling annoyed.
"Whose attention? Look around," she said gesturing towards the buildings, "There is no one here but us."
He rolled his eyes and looked away. He said, "What if they are hiding in the shadows and alleys, waiting to attack us?"
"Hey," she replied, "For all we know, everyone in this town is already dead."
He looked at her with wide eyes.
"Why would you say that?" his voice rose several pitches high.
"Oh my god. Stop being so scared. I was just joking," she continued, "Don't worry. I'll protect you."
She started laughing at this while he just sulked.
They walked past a few blocks. Whatever little number of shops were open, now had started closing. Neon lights illuminated areas where even the streetlights weren't working. People were not seen at all. Occasionally a cat's cry could be heard.
Bored of the silence, she decided to hum a tune. As soon as she began, he said, "You know, we shouldn't go too far. Else we won't be able to find back our way."
"You see that?" she pointed towards something and he followed the direction. There was something blue glowing a little far. He nodded his head.
She said, "That's our landmark. Just follow that light and we'll be back in no time."
He sighed and said, "Okay."
As silence consumed them, and watching him yawn, she started feeling bored. To break the silence, she decided to do something.
"So. What is your name?"
"No."
His answer left her confused. She asked, "Huh?"
"I don't want us to get on first name basis. It's dangerous to give away your details," he replied.
She stared at him and shook her head in disbelief. She said, "Are you serious? Never mind."
After yet another five seconds of silence, she said, "Okay. Why don't we play a game? Like a version of twenty questions." She waited to see his response and he nodded. She continued.
"I'll ask you twenty questions which you'll have to answer. Similarly, you can ask me twenty questions, which I'll have to answer. We can go in alternate order."
He nodded again. She added, "And, yes. No names. Is that cool?"
"Hmm..." he started thinking. Contemplating all pros and cons of the situation, he had to take a decision.
It is a time pass game. You have all night left. It could be fun.
What if she extracts deepest secrets?
So? You don't know her. You'll never see her again.
Oh. That's true.
"Oh my god. Just decide already!" her voice brought him back to reality.
"Okay. Let's play your little game," he said nodding his head.
