Maria sat beside her pale daughter’s bed, who was still unconscious, both of her wrists in a brace and her head covered in band aid.
It was shocking and painful for her to admit that all of this had happened to Carlisia on the first day she moved here but what worried her was how she was going to explain what happened to her.
Of course she couldn’t give out the secret of this town and risk her head.
Taking a deep breath she covers her face with her hands.
How could she turn out to be the Alpha’s mate? It was impossible and unheard of, as far as she knew.
If she knew this was going to happen than she would never have let Carlisia move here because now her poor daughter was in constant risk.
Alphas proved to be very possessive and were never the patient type. When it came to their mates the possessiveness was thousand times more but Alpha Gabriel was a dangerous exception.
He wasn’t only extraordinarily strong but also merciless. He had never once spared a trespasser without an explanation and we all knew that if he had found Carlisia as a threat he would have killed her, right there. This was the reason why there weren’t any humans in this town, its occupants only being werewolves.
Gabriel had left the house just as the doctor had arrived, without even a goodbye but a curt nod and a longing look at Carlisia which made Maria for split second believe that he might even have a heart.
Maria looked at the time on her daughter’s nightstand, which showed two in the morning. Everyone had went to sleep and both Elijah and Ruben were a bit giddy after everything had happened and checked on Carlisia twice but were disappointed and a lot scared when they got no response.
It was shocking how they had bonded with her in such a small amount of time and after tonight vowed to never let any harm on her, even if that harm be the face of their Alpha, they would stand up to him.
After a few more minutes she hears footsteps approaching her daughter’s room and looked up to see Ben on the doorway looking at Carlisia with sorry.
He looks at his wife, who looked like a wreck. Quietly he made his way to stand behind her chair, with his hands on her shoulders.
“Darling get some rest, you’ll need your energy in the morning when she wakes up.” He says in a hushed voice and Maria just nods, knowing her husband was right.
“Yeah, I’ll be there in a moment.” She says softly touching her daughter’s wrist brace, and hears. as his footsteps retreat.
Sighing she gives another look at her daughter and takes a deep breath before leaving the room, making sure the door was wide open so she could hear Carlisia if she ever called for her.
While Gabriel paced in the dungeon, clenching and unclenching his fists, looking at the rogue he had tortured to death, the rogue that had made the mistake to cross Alpha Gabriel Kane. He needed to cool off from today’s events and when he was given the news of the rogue he was more than happy to use him as a punching bag.
Realization had finally dawned upon him that his mate was a human. A weak human yet he still adored her with a passion. But the question still arose, how could this be possible?
Never in centuries, had a werewolf been mated with a human. It was impossible.
This was the very first time he was actually questioning the great Moon Goddess’s decision but he was glad that he finally had found his other half.
His wolf was restless and wanted to mate with her but he had to control him, otherwise he would end mate less, not that he would let that happen but he didn’t know how long he could him down, any moment he could come out and claim her, killing everyone that came in his path.
He shook his head as he took another deep breath.
He had called Ruben and asked all the little things he knew about her but that wasn’t much. He needed to know more.
As far as he was concerned, the only thing he knew about his dear was that she lived in Sydney, father died serving the army, has a rich Uncle who would die for her and was a human.
But the problem was she was sixteen years old while he was a twenty three year old grown man. In their race it was completely normal to have mates ten years older, but for humans this would be disgusting and illegal. With an eight years difference how was he going to make her love him?
Yeah he could just walk in, grab her and lock her away from everyone but that was going to be plan B, if nothing worked.
Sighing he finally decided to take a shower and then go to bed, with that he leaves the dungeon giving a fleeting look at the corpse.
At seven in the morning Carlisia’s eyes shot open to rays of sunlight falling into the room, as she stared at the ceiling of the room. For a split moment she thought she would wake up back at home, in Sydney but then realization dawned on her, but still she couldn’t remember the reason of her sore body.
Her head was throbbing making her want to touch it but as soon as she moved her wrist, she wanted to scream in pain but she felt like someone had stolen her voice.
She finally brought her shaking hands to her eyes and they widened, both her hands were in a wrist brace’s.
How could this happen? She couldn’t remember a thing. The last thing she remembered was talking to Elijah and Ruben.
She shakily ripped the sheets off of her body and found that she was in a dress which as stained in blood.
Slowly she got off the bed making her way to the full length mirror at the corner of the room and her eyebrows rose in surprise as she saw her reflection.
He head was covered in band aid and there was a bruise on her calf not to mention the bruise on her upper arm and the wrist braces to top it all off. Her hair was matted with blood and looked like a rat’s nest, something her dad would never appreciate.
She smiled at the thought of her dad and for a moment she had completely forgotten the pain, both the emotional and physical.
She gave herself another fleeting look before slowly walking back to the bed, flinching at each step.
She finally sat down and took deep breaths, trying very hard to remember a single thing but nothing came.
After a few minutes she could hear feet padding on the hallway floor just outside her room, and her head turned to the door, trying to get a glimpse of the person.
Elijah gave her a small smile as he saw her.
“Can I come in?” He asked and she nods, returning him a smile.
“So, how do you feel?” He asks very gently and slowly while sitting on the sofa she was facing.
She thought of an answer for a few moments than finally replied,
“Like I fell from a building, but no worries.” She says with a bit of humor, and Elijah laughs.
“So how much do you remember of last night?” Elijah asks after a few minutes, serious.
“Not much, actually I was hoping you could tell me. The last thing I remember was us talking then the door bell rang and you guys left.” She says and Elijah takes a deep breath.
“You slipped and fell down the stairs.” He says, lying.
This was the excuse Alpha Gabriel had ordered them to tell her, because they cant let out the truth to her. He was guilty for lying to her, very. Neither him nor anyone wanted to build a relationship with her based on lies but what can they do? This was how things had always been with humans, the outsiders.
His eyes travel to Carlisia’s face that was deep in thoughts but after a few minutes she comes out of her trance and lightly laughs.
“That sounds like me. So clumsy.” She says innocently, completely buying it.
This made him feel guiltier, how they were using her innocence and her kindness as an advantage.
He took a deep breath and decided to change the topic.
“So you up for breakfast? If you are feeling okay to walk.” He asks and she nods, enthusiastically.
“Yes, please.” She says and gets up then ads,
“I’ll be down in a moment. Let me clean up first.” She says and he nods, leaving the room.
She makes her way to the suitcases, vowing to unpack today, and grabs a random comfortable outfit with her fuzzy bunny flip flops. She always wore those flip flops at home because she lived by a single rule,
Comfortable living
And these flip flops were the definition of comfortable.
Quickly making her way to the bathroom, she showered after stripping out of her bloody clothes, very difficultly might I add because of the broken wrists.
Her wrist stung even with a slight movement but she managed.
After a few minutes, she came out dressed in a pair of pink and white yoga pants and a loose white top.
Her hair was towel dried as she painfully clipped it into a single messy, twisted and damp bun.
Finally done she makes her way out of the room and glaring at the stairs a bit as she made her way down.
She would have called Zane first but she didn’t bother to disturb him as he would be sleeping right now.
She noticed that the house was very quiet, which was okay because Carlisia had lived in silence all her life, living in an estate with a single best friend that turned into family, a father who was always gone serving the country and a millionaire uncle who practically lived with them.
Life was great. Even though she spent it with practically only four people but it was spent in luxury and happiness.
But even though all of them were far now, but she could still see happiness here with her mother’s family.
What was not to like about them?
They were kind, and let her in with open arms, even if she barely knew anything about them.
She finally reaches the kitchen and spots Elijah who was sitting on the counter looking at his phone. He was in his sweats and a wrinkled t-shirt.
Elijah looks up at Carlisia and smiles.
“So, what do you want to eat?” He asks and she looks at him astonished.
“You know how to cook?” She asks and he shrugs.
“Of course! But Ruben doesn’t like it and Maria and dad refuse to eat whenever I cook, huh, some people just don’t recognize talent when they see it.” He says swatting his hand like girl causing her to just raise her eyebrow.
She guessed the reason but was still curious how bad he could cook,
“French toast.” She finally says and his face lits up and nods.
“Coming right up.” He says and finally starts taking out the supplies.
“So where is everyone.” Carlisia finally asks, reason being she wanted people in the room to help her if she got food poisoning.
“Oh, they are all sleeping in. They stayed up late last night, very worried about you.” He says with his back to her as he stirred something.
She felt a bit shameful that they went out of their comfort zone for her but she had no control over what happened and to be honest, she certainly can’t remember falling down a flight of stairs.
With that the both of them fell into silence, she watching Elijah cook and Elijah humming a tune.
It was partially awkward.
After a few minutes she heard a pair of feet descending the stairs and turned her head a bit to look at the person and found it to be Ruben.
“Good Morning.” He says groggily as he enters the kitchen and sits beside Carlisia on the counter “Morning.” She replies as he covers his nose with his hand.
“How are you feeling?” He asks looking at her wrists than at the band aid covering her head, which she had taken the liberty to change after her shower.
“Ok, I guess.”
Ruben nods and scrunches up his nose as he smells the awful French toast that Elijah was cooking.
“Is he cooking?”Ruben asks with wide eyes and before she could answer Elijah speaks up,
“Hey, Ruben you want some French toast?”
Causing Ruben to frantically shake his head.
“No thank you, I don’t want to be a victim of your cooking.”He says and looks at her.
“You’ll die of food poisoning after you taste his cooking.” He whispers and she just shakes his head.
“How bad can he be?” She whispers back
“He once decided to cook something for our pet cat.” He says.
“Look that’s so nice.” Carlisia says at awe and then Ruben flatly replies,
“The cat died.” And Carlisia’s eyes widened.
And before she could say another word Elijah happily skipped towards them with a plate in hand and placed it in front of them looking at Carlisia happily.
As soon as her eyes landed on the food they widened.
She looks at Ruben whose hand was covering his mouth , stifling a laugh.
“What is this Elijah?” She asks politely and Elijah laughs patting her shoulder.
“Your French toast silly!” He replies and she just stared at the plate.
The thing that Elijah claimed to be French toast looked like a soggy dark brown mess making her actually believe the cat story Ruben just told her.
How bad can a seventeen year boy’s cooking be?
“Tell me how they taste?” He asks and Carlisia shakily grabs a fork because she didn’t want to hurt Elijah’s feelings and looks at Ruben who was watching her, trying to contain his smiles.
She stabbed a small piece of the blob and placed it in her mouth before being caught in coughing fit.
The food tasted horrible, much worse than Zane and that was saying something.
Ruben burst into a fit of laughter rushing for a bottle of water while Elijah looked at them confused.
“Are you okay Carly?” Elijah asks patting her back while Ruben placed the water bottle in front of her mouth helping her wash it down.
“What do you think dipshit?” Ruben says to his brother but Carlisia was too busy chugging the water down.
After a few minutes she finally stopped coughing taking deep breaths, her eyes bloodshot from the coughing as she wiped a stray tear.
“Wow.” Was all she said as she looked at Ruben who smiled triumphal, knowing he was right all along.
“So how was it?”Elijah finally asks and she just looks at him with an uncomfortable expression.
She didn’t want to hurt his feelings but at the same time didn’t want to lie to him so finally said,
“I…..am lost for words.” She finally says and Elijah’s face lits up.
“I would have hugged you if you weren’t bruised up.” He says and she smiles while Ruben just shakes his head smiling, knowing the true meaning behind her words.
She unsurely smiles back and gets up from the stool.
“Where are you going?” Ruben asks her, watching her as she flinched when she put pressure on her wrist.
“Unpacking.” Was all she replied as she made her way back up the stairs, her appetite completely gone.
She closed the door behind her as she entered her room and looking at the two huge suitcases and the two duffel bags at the corner of the room.
She didn’t want to unpack, it was too much of a job but then all her stuff would be piling up. Besides next week her remaining stuff, including her car would arrive and then she would have more of a mess to clean up.
Sighing she makes her way to the suitcase and unzipping at their very place on the floor. One of her suitcases contained her vast collection of shoes, which didn’t have even a single pair of heels, while the other one contained her expensive clothes. The two duffel bags at the corner consisted of her soccer ball, many many pictures and a lot of books.
Slowly she started to work her way through, gently grabbing the clothes and placing them neatly in her closet, folding her garments and placing them in their drawers.
After she had
