☆A blood-curling scream filled the air and Killia widened her eyes. She looked at one of the guard towers. It was empty, but the lamp was still there. Killia quickly climbed the ladder to the tower and found her batchmate on the ground. There was a large bite on the fallen recruit's neck. There wasn't much bleeding, but her friend was frothing at the mouth. Her lessons back in the training camp allowed her to come to a conclusion.
Spider.
Killia heard a hiss behind her and she withdrew her bow. She spotted eight blood-red eyes fixed on her. She aimed the bow at the spider and squinted, hoping to take it down in one shot. She released, the arrow taking off with a small breeze of air blowing at Killia's face. She looked up and saw the spider, on the ground, the arrow stuck in it's head. It hissed one more time before going limp. Killia faced her fallen friend. She crouched next to his body and sighed.
"Rest now, my friend."
Killia leaped off the tower, meeting her brother, who had probably heard the scream and had come to investigate.
Kei asked, "What happened? I heard a scream."
Killia explained, "Spider. He's down."
Kei gasped and hung his head. He muttered, "He was a good friend."
She patted his shoulder to comfort him, and squeezed. His hand went over hers. After a moment she let go, and went back to her duty.

"Congratulations, cadets. You managed to protect the village no matter what the cost."
Jason praised the surviving cadets in the village. They were gathered around him, in their gear looking tired as fuck. They stayed through the night, scaring off creatures and fighting any that dared close. Some of them were bandaged up due to close scuffles with creatures.
Kei spoke up, his voice filled with sorrow, "Sanchez got bitten. His family will be so sad. He told me he had sisters and a girlfriend waiting for him back at home... He didn't even graduate."
Jason smiled and laid a hand on Kei's shoulder and said, "Yes, but I'm sure he wants all of you to graduate. We've informed his family already. They ask to have him buried at their village, so he could be with them. I'm sure he's happy."
Kei nodded slowly. The rest reached out to him and offered him comfort in the form of reassuring pats and smiles. Killia stayed put, but kept her eyes on her brother. Perhaps she could talk to him privately later.
Jason smiled, and said, "Alright, gather your horses. We're going to the base. Your rooms and uniforms are prepared. We have no time to lose. The commandant wants to see you."
The newly made soldiers nodded and saluted him.
-
"So, you all passed?"
The commandant asked, captain Ellis and lieutenant Probst on either side of him.
The recruits echoed, "Yes, sir."
Sky looked at Killia and Kei, having recognized them and he said, "Alright..."
He stood from his desk and smiled, exclaiming, "Welcome to the Southern Military!"
-
Captain Ellis paced round the new graduates, holding a list of squads.
He barked as he pointed, "You will all still go through some sort of a probation period before you are put under shifts by yourselves or can rank up. Johnson, Swift, Clark, for now you'll be under Petrov. Drew, uh, the male one, and Smith, you're under Foster. Williams, Brown, Hardy, you're all under Aceti."
