The conversation between the commandant and his mentor was going much better and Sky was happy to get to know his mentor.

It had been quiet for a while before Herobrine took a deep breath and told him, "Another thing. There's people among your soldiers keeping their own secrets. They aren't bad, they aren't good. Just remember to empathize when you find out."

Before Sky could even ask, Herobrine sighed, "I won't be using telepathy on you often. It clearly distracts you and I don't want another sprained wrist. We'll just talk mostly here when you aren't busy. I've been annoying you anyways. Come on."

He held out his hand, "I don't trust you enough to teleport back in one piece."

Sky took it and the nasty feeling pulled at his chest again. When Sky opened his eyes, he found himself alone in his room. He looked around. Herobrine somehow didn't teleport with him. Or maybe he did, but teleported away before he could even notice. Sky went to his bed.

-

"Adam, Adam! Wake up!"

Sky gasped as his eyes fluttered open and he saw Ty looming over him.

Ty frowned and said, "You've been screaming like there's no tomorrow. It's bothersome for the people next door. Also, you look like shit. You alright? Do you need me to take over for today?"

Sky nodded wearily and as he sat up, he felt his back twist in pain. At least the uncomfortable feeling in his chest was gone. Sky yawned and reached for his shades in his nightstand. He felt around and noticed that his shades were not there. His shades were the second most important thing to him, his amulet being his first. Losing either would make him go pissed.

"Ty? Where's my-"

His was cut off when a sharp wave of pain struck his head.

"Shades? Don't know. You must've misplaced it. Oh, and you got some reports from Jason over at the training facility. It's on your desk."

Sky stood from his bed and stumbled to his desk, nearly falling over.

Ty asked, "Are you in pain?"

"No, I am most definitely not leaning heavily against my desk groaning in pain- Take a good look at me and ask me that goddamn question again, Ellis."

Ty grumbled and said, "A simple yes would suffice."

"Whatever. Get out of here."

Sky heard a low growl from the captain's throat. The only person he had ever heard make animalistic sounds was Herobrine. He distantly remembers what the white-eyed man told him.

Sky chose his next words carefully, "You sound awful, go and get Seto to see you."

Ty growled more softly and replied with a sharp and avoidant tone, "I just have a sore throat. Don't mind me."

Ty left, slamming the door behind him. Usually, it was Sky in a bad mood, not the quiet and reserved Ty. It seemed odd, but Sky rolled his eyes. Everything was odd nowadays. Sky put his brown cape on and sat on his desk chair. He grabbed the small paper bag full of documents and reached in for a letter from the training facility.

He read it. It was a list of the recruits with their ranks. He eyes the top 10. Every top 10 of each platoon will go through a special, difficult mission. It was different every year, and this year Jason sent a proposal for the special task and/or assessment to be guard duty. He winced.

Sky remembered seven years ago, a village he failed to get to in time was ambushed with a great amount of creatures. Not a single citizen was alive. He had even lost an entire village guard squad. Sky read on. If the five recruits impressed Jason (as sweet as he was, he has extremely high expectations) with their skills, they would graduate earlier than the other recruits to the elites, skipping a couple of ranks.

Sky had approved it some time ago, but with great hesitation. Creature activity was at an all-time high. He feared for the recruits' safety, but knowing Jason, the lieutenant has probably prepared himself for the worst.

Sky took the other letters and they were all the ranks of the recruits in different subjects and of course, overall. He noticed that the Drew siblings were always amongst the top 10. Killia had done exceptionally well and was first for most subjects. Sky stood from his desk and looked at the mirror, he studied his eyes.

-

"Pick up the pace, cadets! You're top 10 so you better act like it!"

Jason ordered the top ten, riding Winona to Emerald Village. The cadets lowered their bodies to their horses and kicked at their bellies, catching up to Jason.

"You'll be on your own from here on out. Fire a flare if you need assistance, we'll be watching. Good luck."

Jason told them before leading his horse towards the hills, where Mitch, Jerome and Ty were waiting. He met the three on the foot of the hill and looked down at the view of Emerald Village. Jerome was using a telescope to watch the recruits move into the village.

He reported, "The Drew sister is patrolling the forest wall. Her brother's stationed towards the meadows. Johnson, Sanchez, Swift and Wilson are at the towers. The rest are patrolling the village as a group."

Jason and Ty exchanged glances and nodded. They were close but still a distance away from the village should the top 10 have any difficulty. It was Jason's idea, and they took turns observing the recruits. The rest just sat at camp, talking or riding their horses around.

-

Jason sighed. He traced a finger along his rifle, watching the recruits scout around Emerald Village. If the top 10 were not able to fight off the mobs, Jason will take fire from the hill while Ty headed to the village, getting them to safety. Jason's accuracy with long-range weapons earned him the extra title of a sniper. The sergeant was reminiscing his sniper training when Jerome exclaimed.

"The Drew sister is facing a couple of creepers. She shot them down with her bow and arrow. Fuck, okay, one blasted and she fell. I think she lost her bow. Ty?"

The captain shrugged. He held out his hand and Jerome passed him the binoculars. Ty took a moment to observe the recruit through them before he put them down.

He folded his arms and replied, "She has her pistol. Doing fine. I won't step in just yet."

Jerome winced and resumed his observation of the young woman. After a moment he whispered, "She scared the rest off. She's resuming her shift."

Ty smiled and said, "See? The girl's fine."

Everyone looked at each other with concern. The siblings were too good to be true. Nonetheless, they stayed put and continued to observe.

-

Killia turned her arm to inspect the burn on her elbow. It wasn't too severe, not too big either. Some cream from the first aid kit in one of the towers would help. She picked up her discarded bow and counted her arrows in her quiver as she walked along the walls.

She looked up when a small boy said, "You're so cool!"

Killia turned around in surprise, meeting a young toddler boy, grinning like a madman. He was basically vibrating with excitement and awe.

Killia allowed herself to smile, "Thanks, kid. You shouldn't be so close to the walls at night though, go home."

The boy squeaked, "O-Okay!"

The boy waved at her with a lot of enthusiasm and Killia found herself waving back. He reminded her of her own brother, and of herself when she was little. When things were alright. Peering down the alley, she made sure the boy really went home and did not linger around. She continued with her assessment, looking over at the hill overlooking the village, and seeing a little bonfire of her superior's campfire.
